I think you are massively overvaluing the Hour Record. For me it’s a nice to have but below even a worlds TT win let alone being anything close to a monument.

Were the criteriums in the 60s and 70s real races or like the 21st century where they are meet the stars events with fixed results and setup?
Not sure, maybe set up every criterium going for the next ten years so that one rider wins and see if they come anywhere near Merckx ?
How are they not real races?

Overblown the hour record ? Why is it not close to a monument? Only a certain type of rider (either great tt’er or great all rounder) can achieve it -
‘a monument ‘ is achievable to a lot of riders.

I think you are disrespecting the palmares of Merckx by seeking to fluff it up with criteriums.

Merckx has an insanely phenomenal palmares packed with the highest tiers of wins in real races that matter to all in cycling history so it does a disservice to him to add in non uci races like criteriums.

Criterium’s don’t count because they’re scripted like WWE(F)/TNA/WCW/AEW/ECW. The winner is selected beforehand and Merckx was the most marketable. The only question is if criteriums back then were like they are today. Plus the 525 might count amateur wins.

The thread is ‘who is better’ talent is not mentioned
The thread is “Who’s the real cannibal.” Neither as far as we know have ate another human. Now if they’re eating results, both are prolific but Merckx won more year over year while racing a lot more. Both have an extremely high win rate of the races they completed. Merckx raced in a time where you went to every race, especially to get paid. Pogacar has the luxury of picking and choosing where he goes due to his salary. Team wise Pogacar absolutely has the advantage but during Merckx’s time the team wasn’t as important. The one thing Merckx has over Pogacar is he wouldn’t have given away the KoM or points jersey or stage wins. So in that regard Merckx is more of a “cannibal”.

Pogacar and Merckx are pretty much in sync when it comes to points on Prestigelisten, which is probably the best ranking system available.

Thanks for sharing this.

For all those that say Merckx is miles ahead of Pogacar well here is your answer, at the same age Pogacar is very close to Merckx, with a clear chance of overtaking him if he rides competitively in to his thirties.
