Well, he's definitely been an undisputed king of these punchy steep finishes this year.

VAMOS PURITO!!!

I think being a nice guy and a classy rider, he should now gift the L-B-L win this weekend to his pal Dan Brown

Nicely finished today with quite some pressure on his shoulders after a busy day of chasing by his teammates. I silently clapped my hands as he crossed the finish line.

Rodriguez on his win:

“It’s the best and most incredible victory of my whole career – said ‘Purito’ – today is definitely one of the best days of my life. I’ve always been in love with these Classic races, and a victory in these competitions has always been one of my main goals: finally, after many good results, I managed to win. Obviously I have to thank my teammates: all of them did a great job from the beginning to the end. It’s true that Mur de Huy was a more suitable final part to my characteristics than Cauberg, but I have to admit it was really hard: it looked like an easy victory, but I did a strong effort in order to defeat my rivals. Now I can get ready for ‘Liege-Bastogne-Liege’ with high motivations: I don’t think this victory will change anything, I’m not the only forerunner, there are many strong riders with chances to win. Everything changed from ‘Amstel Gold Race’ to ‘Fleche Wallonne’: everything can change on Sunday too. So we have to pay a lot of attention and work at our best if we want to take this legendary double”.

this was a fantastic performance from purito, every1 else went backwards immediately after he attacked. his kick uphill is awesome

one of my favourite purito moments is his attack on the steepest part of valdepeñas de jaen in 2010.

I'm a big fan of this guy. I was thinking about it the other day, I became his fan when he had to stop on Sierra Nevada to wait for Valverde on the Vuelta 2009.

If I remember correctly, he would have won that stage easily.

Well, Lotto and Katusha rode a lot out in front today, so I'm sure they're not gonna mind doing same race control come L-B-L.
Actually, if we see BMC doing a lot of controlling - bad news for Purito

Great ride for Purito. Big and solo effort from Katusha on containing Ryder and Nordhuag in the final Ks.

Great win for a well deserving rider. I've been a fan since his days of working for Valverde in the hilly classics. Each year Caisse would send Purito out on the attack in the final km's of LBL, drawing out their opponents and setting Valverde up for the win. I kept thinking that this guy needs to be riding for himself, not as a super-domestique. He's continued to show his class since being given a leadership role with Katusha and finally, finally he gets that big win that he's always come ever so close to getting. Congrats, Purito!!!:)

Edit: I haven't watched the race yet since I'm still at work but the sudden appearance of the Purito appreciation thread was my first hint that things went well at FW. I was tempted not to venture into this and the FW thread and wait till I got home and view the final km's on steephill but I couldn't resist. Plus the full viewing of the race won't be on until the weekend where I am.

J-Rod is also the new nr1 on the (continious) cq ranking after today

1. [ESP] RODRIGUEZ OLIVER Joaquin 2390
2. [BEL] GILBERT Philippe 2366
3. [SVK] SAGAN Peter 1991
4. [ITA] NIBALI Vincenzo 1865
5. [AUS] EVANS Cadel 1734

congrats J-Rod!

Umm why is he the favourite?

He came 42nd in 2010 and 26th last year. Yes he came 2nd in 2009 but was only allowed 2nd after it was abundantly clear who the winner was going to be.

He doesnt come close to Gilbert in terms of odds to win Liege, and there are another 4 or 5 people between them.

I also remember the edition where he went with Boogerd 35km before the finish. But he didn't fully co-operate because of Valverde and even with a 45s advantage they got caught on La Redoute.
That was his chance to win, if he wasn't radio-ordered to take it easy. He'd definitely beat Boogerd in a 2 man sprint....
