The only time somebody wheelsucked me to the point of annoyance was on a 400k ride, with a section into a headwind, and a mate and I were joined by somebody who would not take a turn. We did all we could to put him on the front. This went on for over an hour.

In the end, we got so ****ed off we just pulled over and let him go off on his own.

Yep, if someone asks if they can sit on my wheel, no problems at all. Usually we strike up a conversation.

However, the random dolt who sits on the wheel only to try and outsprint me at the top of the hill gets no respect. I make sure I have enough in the tank for the inevitable sprint.

I've gotta admit I wheelsuck quite often.

Why do I do it?

I wanna test myself and find out if I can hold the wheel. Often by wheelsucking I get faster from A to B.

By the way: My bike weighs 15 kg and has got a hub gear.

Agree, I usually take the drop em approach.

It's an irrational pet peeve of mine. I have no issue if someone tells me they're lost, have bonked, or just want company - usually I welcome it. It's when some Fred holds the wheel for 5, 10, 15 minutes straight just to get their average speed up I get stroppy.

I don't why it bothers me so much but it really grinds my gears :D

Bugs me too but they actually make you just a little bit faster because the airflow might spill off their back rather than yours. it is measurable but small benefit. I think the mind game makes you go a little faster too:)

Maybe because I find it delusional that someone would think that a random Leipheimer hopping on your wheel will make you faster.
Wrong <> delusional. Hyperbole may be as rude as wheel sucking - IMO (cause its a forum) of course.

Once, I actually got wheelsucked in a time trial! Me in skinsuit, TT bars, a number on my back and everything. Some fat guy with 'tash jumps on my wheel as I passed him after the turnaround and it was so unexpected that at first I thought it was another racer who had temporarily lost his mind. But no, some dude just looking for a tow.

Worried about a marshal getting the wrong idea and me getting DQed, I told him to get off my wheel. Incredibly he started yelling at me like I was the a-hole! Being at max and cross eyes the best I could come up with was a whiny "But I'm in a time trial!!!???" Eventually he got tired and came off but it was a stressful few kilometers and really screwed up my ride. Weirdest wheel suck I ever experienced, and I've had a few.

I can never understand why riders have a problem with wheel suckers. I just carry on doing the training ride I was planning, the only difference being I will warn them of road hazards etc. I really can't understand the guys who get aggressive with this.

If the idea was to get from point A to B - I'd drive my car. Cycling is for the mind and body. When another person latches on to your personal space without being invited its like someone talking to you 6" from your face. Most of us understand that, although I can't come up for a logical reason that matters either.
