RCS to share TV revenue with teams?

Makes tonnes of sense once 1 race starts to do it - teams can start to prioritise the money races and the pressure will increase on other races to follow.

Only potential issue is there aren't that many races with pots of gold available to distribute. Tends to be the downfall of many sharing initiatives to forget the importance of someone in the chain actually earning.

Great. One more master for already radio-controlled puppet riders.. now TV stations will have a say in riders' strategy too "to make it more interesting for the spectators". And from time to time they will ask a rider to dance for a camera with a TV station slogan. Now it's gonna be fun... for sure

TV-rights have been sold in cycling for a long time, the only difference is that the teams will get a share like other sports.

Aye I think you have misunderstood what revenue sharing is about. Another showing that cycling is in good hands with the RCS.

I really hope this encuourages more WT teams to spread their talent between Tour and Giro.

I see this as a really positive move.

How will the money be shared among the teams? Does every team get the same amount or does the team of the winner receive the most money or something? The second would be really cool, as the Giro field would be much better

Organizers have a great way of sharing their profits (from TV or any other income) by just increasing winnings pool.
And by giving more prizes (instead of first 10 riders, reward first 20, rewards for the team classifications and such).

That actually IS very interesting.

they better share it with how much teams have been in the forefront of the racing. netapp should get almost no money, or rabobank. androni should get most probably :)

But does this mean that the generous broadcasting online to the world of il Giro & MilanSanRemo is going to become pay-per-view?

no of course not. this is not usa. in europe pay per view doesn't work. especially not for cycling

Wouldn't be the first time, would it?
Let's hope Rai and co are going to try to go down that road again.

Hopefully, this will be used as a carrot to attract the best riders from team rosters.

I think pay-per-view would be a fantastic way of turning the fans off in droves, if it were expensive. On the other hand, if it were something like £5-20 for the whole RCS season, that wouldn't be so bad. Would still put a lot of casual fans off though - and it is the people who don't really know much but the Tour who are the ones RCS want.

For as long as the Tour and the Giro are close enough that it's hard to ride both, there is going to be a situation when one becomes more prestigious. People want to see the best versus the best, so as one races attracts more top names, it becomes harder and harder to justify racing the other as well or instead. It is a self-perpetuating cycle. Then something will happen that turns the tide, like the premier stage racer(s) being either French or Italian and always riding their home race or this new revenue deal, and it will swing the other way, only for it to flip back sometime in the future.

... And ain't working in the USA either- NBS wants the entire monopoly of Cycling coverage while charging people on line if your TV cable carrier lacks the channel.....

Good start to getting the Giro on an even footing with the Tour. They've had good parcours for years, and more recently a more international host of potential winners. Time to use the almighty dollar to lure a few more and soon we'll be talking about the Tour like we do of La Vuelta a race with a crisis of identity.

unfortunately perhaps. that will never happen because of history and the tour being placed in july

It already happened (in the 60's - 70's the Giro was considered bigger than the Tour) so it can happen again.
The july thing is an issue, yes. The history isn't.
