While it takes a couple seconds to thread the shift cable through the "old" style Shimano STI lever, it now can take a couple hundred seconds to do the same on the "new" style STI. waawaa grrrr.

Any tricks from anyone who can "thread the cable" through the shifter in 10 seconds or less?

I guess it just takes really good aim....

Be sure the cable is clear of any fraying and a touch of grease on the end and it finds its way in OK for me.

DONT USE NONE STAINLESS cables they will jam the lever up and wreck it. you may have to loosen the bar tape to get the end in the cable. dose take a little longer Shimano probably will come up with a very expencive tool for the job soon
that is what usualy happens

About to do this myself. What did you end up doing for cables/housings? I purchased the yokozuna "jet lubed" cable set. Reviews were good though I'm still wondering if I've fallen for some marketing shtick.

Do it before you mount the lever to the handlebar. If they're already on, yep, good aim.

I have used Shimano cable/housing only.
The yokozuna cable will feed through the shifter in the same way I bet.

And like bustedknuckle said, it is easier to thread the shift cable through the sfifter and into the housing without the bar tape installed. Seems you will have to unwrap your bar tape anyway to install the new housing.

You do need to roll the brake hood forward a bit to expose the cable entry hole on the right hand side, and it is possible to tweak the delicate and exposed springs on the inboard side of the shifter if you manhandle it roughly.

Enjoy your new jet-lubed cables!

Not what I said, easier if the lever isn't on the handlebar at all. Same for Campagnolo and sram.

Cables are essentially the same, Yokosuna or not. IMHO, after market stuff like Gore, Yokosuna, Nokon, are an expensive answer to a simple question and don't radically change shifting or braking, particularly when you consider the $price$.

Ohhh, feed the derailleur cable through the lever before you mount the lever to the bar....

Geez, why did I not think of that duh.
Had to read it twice too.
And that is the trick I was looking for!

Thanks Bustedknuckle
