I would tend to say it brought apartheid into world prominence as you say and which led to the boycott of their sporting teams for the next 20+ years.

It's weird that he had to lie about his age so he could have a better shot at playing for England (he was born in '28 but officially '31). Also, credit to Arlott for going out of the way to allow Dolly to have a career in England.
