Shocker! George Hincapie Buys Stage Win

In a story that should come as a surprise to no one, Oscar Pereiro confesses Hincapie bought a stage win for 50,000 something, Euro or USD, it's not clear.

No story yet translated well into English, but the bottom line is George buys stage win. Classy!

Apparently, this interview is the origin of the story??? https://youtu.be/hXIDTX85Q_c
Some of the comments on Andrew Hood's twittering feed suggest some fans are in for a major disappointment.

The sport of cycling is like the world's dirtiest underwear, and this is just another *** stain.......

Pereiro claims he thought Hincapie wanted to sell him the stage. Now, if you ask me, that story makes zero sense (Pereiro did all the work and Hincapie was faster, what exactly did he think he was paying for?) and it's more likely that Hincapie did buy the stage, but at any rate that's emphatically not what Pereiro says.

I really wish I understood Spanish better. Unless Pereiro said he would pay if Hincapie did not contest the finish, Hincapie agreed and then went and pipped him anyway, what is the issue here? Now I am totally confused.

All I know is I hated that stage then. I thought how weaselly to sit on claiming your guy was in yellow (yeah like by a half hour) then come around at the end and act the hero.

I feel sorry for Pereiro, having his Tour win rob away from him only to get it back via the winner being suspended. Sad day for clean cycling for Pereiro, the only clean rider in the race that year in 2006

I'm not sure what "cleans" with anything relating to the conversation at hand, but thanks for stopping by.

When Pereiro came back to the team bus after the stage he was yelling like a crazy man. Don't feel too sorry for him. He used to brag to his teammates about how much drugs he was taking.

doping talk aside, why is this A, a surprise and B, a reason for internet folk to get angry?

afaik deals between cyclists are common, how many times have you seen a leader letting somebody win in exchange for help in break? its not money deal but it is still a business that affects the result of a stage

Cycling doesn't even crack the top 10 for dirtiest underwear. Plus, this stain is already crusty, not new.

Maybe fans would rather watch an 'honest' race where the winner doesn't buy the win...or dope...

CN's story: http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/hincapies-strategy-questioned/

He says that even though coming up to the last ascent he felt amazing “Y al pie del último puerto me sentía tan fuerte que estaba seguro de que iba a ganar” he accepted to pay Hincapie 50,000 so Hincapie wouldn't contest the sprint and he wouldn't lose any time preparing it as Caucchioli and Boogerd were approaching "pero que a cambio me pedía 50.000. Y yo le dije que sí enseguida porque así me aseguraba definitivamente la victoria y no tenía que pensar en dónde esprintar ni perder tiempo preparándolo, teniendo en cuenta que Caucchioli y Boogerd venían cerca
But, as the story goes, he hadn't understood Hincapie correctly, and the deal was actually the other way round. And he didn't get the full 50,000. He also doesn't seem to remember what currency it was, make of that what you will.

I have it from Floyd that Pereiro was really pissed after the stage. He was yelling on the bus. Floyd remembers it as George agreed to let Pereiro win then sprinted away at the end. There was also some sort of lack of trust between the two, like George figured if Pereiro agreed to take money then he would have broken the deal, so George did to Oscar what he suspected Oscar would have done to him. George never paid anything.
