specialized boa lacing maintenance

Just picked up a pair of Specialized BGR shoes. They are great. But I notice some "maintenance" instructions to the boa system. How many of you out there actually do the maintenance on them ? (ie remove the buckles, and treat the line with a spray etc. etc. ) What's the frequency I should follow ?

I ask because I'm from the old school (velcro straps and ratchet) and have never used these BOA cable system before and find it funny now , that I have to add "shoe maintenance" to the bike :)

I recently got a pair for my cross bike. They do require maintenance.

Always, pull on the cord with one hand when loosinging to remove your foot from the shoe, otherwise the cord can get tangled inside the pully, and bent or crimped. That is not required when making incremental adjustments, only when removing the shoe, when there will be a lot of slack in the cord necessary to remove you foot.

For cleaning, follow the recommendations and you should be fine. I believe they suggest using silicone spray and cleaning with water. I do this when they get dirty/dusty, otherwise they get sticky and tightening becomes a chore, especially when clipped in.

A little water spray bottle with an adjustable spray head is what I use.

Not knowing any better, I did get my cords tangled and had to remove the pully and restring them. Later on, one of my BOA fittings actually broke off the shoe, the store I purchased from arranged a swap for a new pair.
