SRAM XX 11-36 with Ultegra 10speed 6600 STI

Just finished building this custom Serotta using the new SRAM XX 11-36
10 speed cassette along with Shimano 6600 10 speed road shifters
and a 9speed XT rear derailleur.

It shifts great woohoo. 650 wheels, triple crank - climbing machine for sure!

Yep, that'll work but with 650c wheels, a triple(30t small ring) and a 36t...can ya even pedal fast enough to keep from falling over in the lowest gear?

Plus $330 or so..yowser, lots of $($200+) for 2 teeth, 60 grams..but yer $.

I built this bike for a customer, so it was her money🙂

She just turned 60, rides/looks like 40, and has been on a 650 trek with 9 speed mountain bike gearing. But now that SRAM has brought out 10 speed mountain bike cassettes - her new bike used that.

I was not sure if the Ultegra STI and 9 speed XT rear derailleur would work with the SRAM 10...but it does pheew.

If you plug the gearing into Sheldon Brown's calculator, the lowest gear gives around 3.6 mph at 60 rpm. That's a brisk walking pace.

Which is just about ideal for climbing really steep stuff, I think - the lowest gear gives up the ghost just as it becomes just as fast to walk.
