Stolen Bike

For those who followed the saga of my incident with the car door several weeks back (look up the thread if you want to discuss the accident - pleaes ignore it here), you may find it hilarious to know that:

1) I have been riding the bike paid for by the insurance cheque for a few weeks now.

2) It was stolen from my office indoor carpark yesterday afternoon.

I am once again dealing with insurance claim paperwork, although this time I am also talking to the police. I have seen the security footage and whilst it does not get the guy's face, I know that he was in the building for just over 90 seconds and he left by riding out on his bike while guiding mine by hand on the bars.

For reference, the bike was very well secured with all other bikes - but he had a big set of bolt cutters in his bag and it appears he knew which bike to go for before he arrived in the building...

The bike was a 2011 Orbea Onix in blue and white with a Shimano 105 groupset.

Maybe so, but in most of the world cops don't give a rip about a potential bike theft. Most don't even care about actual stolen bikes.

sadly true but I have to say that the police officer handling mine has been great.

It's a little bit off topic Martin, but I'm interested to know a bit more about you experiences with bike insurance and couldn't find any threads in the forum.

Like you, I'm in Australia. I looked at getting crash and out-of-home theft cover for my road bike (new retail value about $8,000) as an extra on to my home and contents cover, but the premium would have been $500 pa which made it seem like an each way bet to me when depreciation is taken into account.

You sound like you have got excellent value for money from your cover - are you able to tell me (here or PM) what sort of cover you have been able to get and approx price? Thanks in advance.

Just get an AD cover through a broker, should have auto cover for bikes up to $20k, covered whilst in use, but not in a race.

Don't mean to sound mean but why would you leave such a bike out in an open area (access-wise)? I'd of stashed it in the building as close to me as possible. There has got to be somewhere where you work where you can stash it or at least ask the boss for a storage area if you can't leave it in near your office/work area.

valid question - the carpark is internal to the building though and I wsa led to believe there was good CCTV cover throughout including all entrances. As it turns out, that cover is only in a couple of areas and not over the bike parking section of the carpark.

The building is going to put a security cage around the entire space in the next few weeks...

and in my defence, my bike was parked next to a new pinarello... so it wasnt really the stand out bike in the area

Speaking as an individual and NOT as a moderator of this site - I would happily suggest you Google "CycleSafe". It is a cover offered by IH group and underwritten by QBE. Bikes are within the contents policy and are covered for ALL events. Bit of an excess on carbon frames as expected and there is an option (which I take out) to pay about $100 a year to be covered for race damage too.

Sorry, man. Grrrrrrrrr! Bike like this one below?

Pretty nice bike the Onix is. Good thing I'm really not superstitious and believe bad things come in 3's (1. car-doored, 2. stolen ride, 3.?).

Krebs303 had a thread about 'Bike Thief Payback'. Maybe you could bait the sucker and get it on video... the paint ball guns would be a nice touch too.

Edit: Sorry... just realized this is the same vid posted earlier in this thread.

sigh.....

Its worse than you think......The one that was car-doored was the one in your picture - but with off-white instead of blue and running Ultegra.

The one that was stolen was the 2011 model in this photo.

Hate to break this to you... but the new bike that was stolen? I crashed it on a bend 2 weeks ago.... still healing on the elbow/knee etc...

So on the negative side that confirms the '3s' theory but on the positive side, the third thing has already happened :D

You know, I'd be among the first in line to speak out against vigilantism, but in this case, I think it was well done and richly deserved. No question in my mind who the bad guy was - and I think what he got might even prevent him from trying to steal bikes again. Unlike a jail term - which would only teach him how to steal bikes better next time. Or cars, or otherwise up the ante. This way, nobody permanently hurt. Sounds like justice to me.
Cops I've known, and considered friends, or at least more than acquaintances, still wouldn't pay much attention to stolen bikes.
