Swapping Ergopower internals

A trick question for any techies out there that I can't seem to get answered by Campag itself ...

My roadie has 2006 (or thereabouts) Record levers and my 'cross bike has 2009 model Ultrashift Veloce levers.

I love the shape of the newer levers, but much prefer the heavier gear change feel of the older levers.

I was wanting to replace any of the internals in the new levers with parts for the older levers to get that shifting feeling that I like. Sadly with Campag changing to sell all of the internals as a single "spare part" I can't check through the spares manual any more and see if that would work.

So, has anyone out there tried to do what I'm looking at doing? If so, what part(s) did you swap (and if you can give me the Campag part number so that I know exactly what to order, that'd be awesome)?

Thanks for your help.

Hold on, I think you want these, also specify the -r version which are the race version which are stiffer or more like 2006 (I think?)

and

You could just upgrade the rear shifter or just the front or both, so gave you both links. Again the Branford boys will get you situated. Might as well get new hoods while your at it, for that new shifter feel and smell :D

Cannot be done. Starting in 2009, the shifter innards changed completely and there is no way to put older innards into the 2009, 'new shape' bodies. You can try to source another conical washer for the 2009 levers to make them clickier but you are right, complete innards only now.

OP wants to make 2009 Veloce levers clickier. No way to put 2006/7/8 Record/Chorus innards(including 'red' springs) into a new shape lever.

Hence why I twice said to contact the Branford boys. They'll get him the right parts.

Thanks for the responses.

ElChingon - I'll definitely give the guys at Branford an email and see what they say.

I actually may have overtaken the need for the post today anyhow. Was picking up my partner's MTB from what is looking like becoming our LBS (going through that process again having changed province) and the mechanic there says that he's changed over the springs in first generation Ultrashift before. So between that and what I can get from Branford, I may well have a solution!

Will post up what I find out/where I get to.

Again, thanks for the responses folks. :)

Except except for the wee springs that hold 2 ball bearings in a disc that runs in another notched disc, there are no 'shift springs' in the sense of older shift springs. As I mentioned, you can add a notched conical disc that essentially makes the stack too tall and makes the shifting 'harder', hence 'clickier'..

hey BK, i have a question or two for you.

i have replaced the internals on a bunch of ergopowers over the years; upgraded 9 to 10, replaced corroded internals, etc. i have a bike with a set of 2 year old 10 speed mirage levers. the internals according to the schematic are slightly different from the old stuff and i have heard that the body is different so there is no chance to upgrade them with 10 speed record. is this true? because i hate the fact that you can only shift one gear at a time.

one more thing. another thing that bugs me about the mirage is the thumb shifters are convex not concave. when i first saw that i thought it was a mistake. i was wondering if it would be possible to swap those around, left to right, to make them concave?

cheers.

These levers, like Centaur and Veloce of 2007/8 are based on Xenon levers and cannot be upgraded, or even fixed. Best to find some 2006 or older levers, any model or 2007/8 Record or Chorus.

thanks for the info.

by "or even fixed" do you mean that if in the event they stop shifting it's time to by a whole new lever? if so, how uncampy.

i'm thinking of scrapping all of my 10 speed stuff anyway. it's time to change all of the bikes over to 11, i think.

Those last two posts (Parera and BK) cracked it for me!

My Veloce were bought in summer of '09 and were the very first of that model year - so before the internals change that BK mentioned (which I never realised had happened until I read that).

So I ordered a part (EC-CE110 - the 10 speed internals for RH Ergo lever) from my LBS. Dropped the bike in when I took a 29er for a test ride on Saturday and it was all swapped over when I got back. Commute to work today via some of the trails in Gatineau Park was bliss!! The shifting isn't as heavy as my Record levers, but there's now a much more positive feel (and an audible click). Much more like the Campag shifting that I know and love!! :D

Thanks to all who posted some words of advice - and especially to those last two posters. :)
