The organisers of the event seem to have decided that the cult of personality is more important than sporting competition: pretty appalling.

Good that Pogacar realised it was inappropriate for him to accept it, but giving away something that wasn't really his, certainly not a thing that he had won or earned, is scarcely an act of heroic generosity (ditto bidons in a race, when did giving those away turn someone into a folk hero?).

Teddy given the trophy despite the race cancellation, what a f**king legend! Just give him Il Lombardia trophy already.
Amazing era we are living in and get to witness.
Theres not a cyclist in the pro peloton who dont think he is the greatest of all time, this is another example of admiration ive said before people have for him and it speaks volume, remarkable indeed. You notice it when your around, the status of Pogacar is something ive havent witnessed before and ive seen them all, its pure admiration opposed to other greats, that stage in Giro forgot the name of the cyclist crying but another great example. Also a great gesture of Pogacar to recognize and give it to the youth. Legendary stuff.

Where did you read they tried to offer it to him? All I can see is the organizers asked to photograph themselves with him

i hope he will not race after Lombardi. the small teams can't harvest any significant points, when he (and is other buddies from UAE) around. but this dude is crazy enough to start racing from TDU till Lombardi next year, and even if race is cancel he is now being rewarded - unbelievable!

Of course, if that is misreported, and they simply asked him to turn it into a signed trophy, there is no fault redounding to them. But I said "The organisers of the event seem to have decided...", and on the basis of the report it did indeed seem that way.

That Lucas cycling blog account is quite popular, seems to get or harvest a lot of images. Seems like an English as a second language thing and not really a legit journalist. I don’t know, maybe the organizer had a bad idea and it’s true to the point of pogi didn’t want it for obvious reasons

He’s not a legit journalist at all lol. In fact, he is notorious because he just goes and takes tweets posted by other people and posts them without giving credit. And then when he’s confronted about it, he just says sorry, saying he’s still young but he just goes and does the same thing again.

The optics are not great, but I would not rely on this particular source, if the news haven't been reported elsewhere.

I can imagine that the organizers would have wanted some media time with Pogačar and to at least show off the trophy. Still, a bit iffy.
