Take the spacer... out o_O ?

I have purchased some RS31s ( http://tinyurl.com/l46v9c7) and also a Ultegra 6500 9 Speed Cassette (My old cassette is 9 speed (Old back wheel is on the turbo) - tried them out on a very short pootle today and noticed the gearing seemed... ok but gear 5 seemed to be skipping. (6 -> 4) (Change seemed slightly delayed too)

I have the 10 speed spacer in at the moment, but should I add another spacer or just take it out or will I need a different one in ? Have heard that 10 speed is narrower than 9, does that mean that 11 and 9 speed are the same width.

Wheels only came with a 10 speed spacer so I assumed that I'd need it in for 9 speed hub - but maybe I'm wrong on that.

Thanks !

RS-31 are 11s compatible so you need that fat spacer, with a 9s cogset(or 10s or even 8s).

If it's slow to come down the cogset to a higher gear, may be RD adjust, or drag in the cable/housing/BB guide or perhaps a bent der hanger.

9s and 10s total width/stack of cogset are about the same, 11s much taller, so no fat spacer if it were a 11s cogset on those wheels.

The wheels are supplied with a thickish spacer that you need for all speeds apart from 11.
You need no further spacer for 9spd but need the additional thin spacer (supplied with the cassette) for 10spd.

That's 1.85 mm. And the thin one, that you don't need, is 1.0 mm.
