Team car cam: was it a 'slecht idee' or a 'prachtige demonstratie'?

The 2011 Ronde was Sporza's first experiment with in-car cams.

We all saw Wilf Peeters' chubby face go through the highs and lows and we all heard what JV said. We all saw how they captured that rare moment when Riis actually smiles as Nuyens wins.

Sometimes there were crystal clear insights, others the sound quality was pretty horrific. RTBF spoke over many of them.

I thought it was a cool idea and it certainly generated some heat here on the forum but it still needs a bit of polishing.

Over to you: a great idea or an epic fail? :)

Great idea if you ask me, shows a bit of emotion too. Just dont choose to broadcast things like; 'Wheelsuck and lets sprint'. ;)

I don't know if people are aware of this, but France 2 has been doing something similar for years at the Tour de France

Yes indeed, but I wonder if Sporza might now do it in more of the races they cover. And doesn't France 2 just focus on one team?

It's interesting, but either I or the Spanish commentators need to work on our Dutch.

(Also, so much for the claims that radios aren't even used to give tactical commands, they're just for the punctures, the crashes and the water bottles).

Yes I think they pick 1 team per day. Also often they go up to the windows of other cars with their moto and interview the DS during the race

It wasn't great during the early parts of the race, when all we saw was guys telling their riders 'OK there is a hill in 3km, get to the front', but I loved it towards the end. QS talking to the Leopard car about why Chav wasn't pulling, then of course JV's gaffe, and the in-car reactions to the result from Saxo and Quick Step were fantastic.

Great idea, if commentators would shut up during that. :)

Liked the QST - Leopard war. That was great. :p

+1 on both.

i find it an absolutely awesome idea. "no riding no riding" and "too strong too strong" just became legendary.i really want to see it in liege this year.

If we're going to be stuck with radios, then yes, it's a good idea. However, this is basically just a distraction from the real issue which is riders not thinking for themselves... which is still the case. And JV really shot his bolt with the "we don't talk tactics" argument today.

It was ok but it showed some of the commentators up for being morons. Harmon telling us that Peeters was the Katusha DS. It was interesting but did nothing to strengthen the arguments for radios.

JV: "Don't pull. We're riding for 3rd."

Way to go Garmin-Cervelo. Without radios, they might have had Farrar on the podium.

I'm not sure that Tyler would have podiumed but today we found out that JV is the Gen X/Y 'gimme, gimme' that I've suspected for the last year or two. Garmin Cervelo need to jettison this guy before he blows their entire season. I hope that from now on NOBODY takes anything seriously that is proposed by this whinger.

On the in car footage though, great innovation. Watching in the UK though, we were subjected to the Eurosport commentary team talking over every cut.
