We call them Cigani (Gypsies), my older daughter goes to class with one Romani girl, she even has special teacher just for her.
Many of them still does not goes to school.
Lol I saw two or three families of them couple of days before, they are practicing begging outside of church, after that head of family collect all money, as you know that Zam Zam. I suppose same as in Italy.
State investing lot of money in their education etc they have a parliament representative which is huge step ahead, contrary England or Italy as far I read.
What Hypocrisy that EU thing is. They force us to invest in their health care and houses (even we live like that for centuries) but on the other hand in EU they chase them like devils himself.

In Macedonia, some of them call themselves Egyptians (they believe that they are from Egypt), I met one Ramo/Ramzes.

I hope that thread is about Romani people:D

We have some here in my region. I don't know exactly how many groups but I think there are quite a few. There is a girl in my class who is apparently dating a "gitan". The politically correct term here is "les gens du voyage" (travelling people), but I think none of the other terms are insults.

I've seen some of their camps along highways or busier streets outside town, once I saw their caravan on the highway and was surprised they all drove Mercedes.

Recently there have been several women who have been begging in town, who I think might be gypsies. Sometimes they have smaller children with them. A friend of mine recently said that the men drop them off in their Mercedes in the morning, then pick them up again in the evening, I have no way of knowing whether that is true though.

It is difficult for me to understand their way of life but I was appalled by Sarkozy's expulsions not too long ago. IMO it was solely a blatent populistic attempt to gain votes from the far right, nothing more. I very much agree with EU Commissioner Viviane Reding who said that this set a very dangerous precedent.

Gypsy comes from the Greek word Αιγύπτιοι which means Egyptian. Some indeed believe they came from Egypt, though you have to be careful with that. In Greek texts Egyptian is practically a synonym for a deceiver, liar, thief, etc

Where I come from, those whom people call "gypsies" tend to have Irish roots.

Their funeral marches were nothing less than spectacular, completely blocking access in and out of the small town where I went to school.

Then, as a law student, I came across a now famous judicial review concerning a family whose child was always being expelled from the schools in which he was placed. The issue of a right to education then developed into a rather interesting debate about whether one could enjoy the rights of a citizen if one did not to pay taxes or social security contributions.

Did not knew that, thanks.
We call them just that and they are fine with that, Romi term is more like Afro American political correct name for Blacks, if you ask me it is hypocrisy.
And yes my country try to exterminate them in WW2 as well Germans in gas chambers.
We had racial laws for Gypsies, Jews and dogs. They are thieves as beggars now yes, but many of them are working with scrap metal business. Actually I love to talk with them while they driving around, they are nice as any human, just different way of living. I am kool with that.

Yeah, we call them Zigeuners which comes from the Greek word for a Sorcerer.

The Roma, I think, have their origins in Northern India. I'm not sure where the name Roma comes from though. I guess it has a different etymology than the word Roman as I can't see how the 2 could ever be related.

Here in Finland we call them "manne". They're really, really annoying. Although not all of them of course, my uncles wife is a gypsy, though her family doesn't wear their traditional clothes or act like them in any way.

In my town all the gypsies live pretty much on one block. If your bike's been stolen and you go look for it at the gypsy block you are most likely to find it there. They always carry knives with them and move in groups and often fight with normal people and get their *** kicked. One of them was caught putting a saw under her dress. Wish they would go somewhere else.

I think one of the more accepted theories is that they were originally assembled from mercenary fighting groups in northern India. Certainly their language belongs to the Indo-Iranian branch of Indo-European.

There are many nomads and travellers that are not Roma (or any of the other associated groups eg Sinti), obviously, and this can lead to confusion of derogatory terms, which I know can cause friction.

I don't know if there are any Romani people travelling around this country (New Zealand) - we do have semi-nomadic travellers here that travel around in house trucks or converted buses, but they tend to be either hippies or retired baby-boomers who have sold up everything else for a life on the road. They set up camp where they can but certainly the hippy-types come in for a lot of discrimination from the local people and from time to time they get evicted from local council-owned land.

I have heard of Gypsy/Romani travellers referred to as "Pikies" (in the move Snatch). I assumed it was cockney rhyming slang - does anyone know it's origins?

The roma suffer great discrimination in bulgaria but as descender says their criminal enterprise is really good.
Haven't read such bull**** for a long time.

If you are a gypsy in Bulgaria, you:
1) don't pay any bills or taxes - no one will come to collect them/take you to court
2) get free health care
3) no prosecution for crimes - gypsies are detained only before elections/other special circumstances
4) get social benefits, additional money support through eu funding programs, etc.
5) be given a new house (paid by the eu citizens of course), etc.

*by gypsies i mean the overwhelming majority of gypsies

Zigeuners is German term also I think.
From the heart of Europe, from Antemurale Christianitatis, Zagreb of course.

In Italy, which, as in much of Europe, has had these people since the Middle Ages or possibly already in antiquity, they are called zingari or gypsy (which el pistolero has etymologically explained well). And are thought to have moved out of India over 2000 years ago.

On the other hand, since John Paul II and the fall of the Berlin wall, they have also been referred to as rom, precisely because the arrived from Romania and other slavic territories, although daci would perhaps be preferable in the uncivilized, nomadic and ultimately barbarian dialectical senses. In any case, I believe that rom and zingaro mean essentially the same thing, only one has a historical significance, the other a modern, geographical one. Though both having the same ultimate origin in India in the ancient world.

In Ireland I believe they are called "tinkers."
