Where does Vino fit in all of this..?

Im surprised nobody has mentioned TLBM (The legendary Bauke Mollema)

Good point: I see Vino, Di Luca, Scarponi (maybe) as extremely tough trivia questions. Will not be quite like Roche or anyone.

Expect a very hard question in 30 years to feature one of these guys.

Maybe like this one.
Q. Who is the only TDF winner to never win a stage?
A. Roger Walkowiak

Also Landis will be remembered as the only guy stripped :D

Jens doesnt need to win.. Winning is for Pussies. Jens takes winning, swallows it, and craps it out the other end.

Are you sure about that? He's a good rider, decent domestique but certainly not the legend he's made out to be. More a rider in the O'Grady, Rogers teflon coating mould though.

Jens will already be forgotten 10 years after his career unless he becomes a famous DS or something.

Not by Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwin. They likely keep a signed picture of Jens on their nightstands and a wallet sized photo in their wallets, such is their man-love for him.

They already have a combined age of a gazillion years, so here's hoping they're retired by then.

To Jens' credit he is one of the few people in cycling history to have sat on a break all day then at the end when it was down to two men sat up and let he guy who did all the work in the finale take the win.

And Gilbert in 9 years.:D

Look, Jens has made provisions.
He has nearly completed a football team and just few more kids to have a complete cycling team.
Just imagine all those little Voigts attacking the peloton as a whole....ok...heeeeere we goooo...

Of course all in the shadows of the great duell: Max Armstrong vs Max Ullrich.

Vino should always be remembered. Riding style, suicide attacks, some big wins coupled with some dumb losses. Always waiting for him to do something crazy. He's great.

I think the legend moniker is used far far too much these days. I think most if not all of the current crop will be Trivial Pursuit answers more than Legends.

The exceptions? Gilbert for his 2010-2011 seasons & back to back Lombardia wins and 2011 Amstel/Ardennes titles. If he builds on that in 2012 he'll cement his status.

Most of the others lack exploits of sufficient panache. Cancellara's Ronde was impressive but compared to Vanderaerden's 85 win it pales.

You need defining efforts à la Ocana, Pantani & yes, Tchmil.

Indeed.
That's greatness.

Slightly off topic but:
I sometimes wonder if Merckx went on vacation in Italy would anyone recognize him?

And if he went to Italy during his glory period would he be a big deal there? Just wondering

Doubt it, but I don't think many people would recognize say Rod Laver, or any of the football stars from the 70's either.

It depends on how big cycling really is/was there. In his glory period he won the Giro 5x.
