The most spectacular crackings in recent years

I'd like to collect in this thread stages with one (or more) rider(s) losing unpredictably minutes and minutes in a single climb (in last 20-30 years). It's a while I don't see such a thing anymore (at least not with the frequency I used to). It would be nice to find pictures or videos. It's compulsory to provide at least a link and the total time lost :)
Let's begin with a classic ;)

Corvara In Badia - Passo Coe 222 kms (Giro 2002)
12_2002_17.jpg

Stage 17 of that Giro. A young Cadel Evans, at his first ever partecipation, wears pink on stage 16. He has just one MTF and the final ITT to go. In the first positions of the GC there's also Dario Frigo, another favourite.
Those two competely bonked that day, in a way I hardly ever saw.

It took me about 3 weeks to download the 'Sporza Wielerjaaroverzicht 2002' form cyclingtorrents, but there's a small bit in there about that stage.
Also Cipo winning Gent-Wevelgem in an amazing way. Totally worth the wait.

I'll see if I can take some screenshots.

2006 TdF, stage 16 Flandis bonked, losing 10:04 to the stage winner (Chicken), and 8:10 to Pereiro.
Couldn't find a link:eek:

2008 TdF, stage 10 to Hautacam Valverde was dropped by Voigt:eek: on the Tourmalet and lost almost 6 minutes.

2005 Vuelta, stage 15, Menchov lost over 5 minutes to Heras.

1998 TdF, stage 15, you all know what happened there.

Rein Taaramäe, on Xorret del Catí in 2009. This climb is less than 4km long. At the base he and his fellow breakaway companions had over 3 minutes over the péloton. And Rein was feeling good; he quickly cast his breakaway companions aside and made for the line with 6km to go, more than 2 of which were easy, comfortable downhill.

It was looking good for the Estonian champion, but suddenly further up some of the people he'd shelled were catching him fast. And then the heads of state blew past him like he was standing still as Purito, Evans, Gesink and Valverde looked to put time into Sánchez and Mosquera. Then the Sánchez group blew past him like he was standing still. That's because, by this time, he was standing still.

He eventually crossed the line in 111th place, 8'47" behind stage winner Gustavo César Veloso, all of it and more lost inside 4 kilometres.

Not sure we can count the 2005 Vuelta one, that was more brilliant teamwork on Liberty front than it was Menchov blowing. He had no-one around him and had to chase for 40+km, but he didn't blow particularly spectacularly IMO

Others are good ones though

That's the one I came here to post. Really it says something about his mentality that he could push himself to such an extreme. Not that it's always a good idea.

A very light and recent example, but I doubt anyone expected Andy Schleck to lose 2 seconds let alone nearly 2 minutes on the little bump into Gap which was supposed to be a transition stage.

Also, perhaps since he wasnt such a contender at the time Pereiro's loss of 25 minutes wasnt seen as such a big deal, but in hindsight stage 11 or 12 or whatever of 2006 was the stage on which the eventual tdf winner would lose almost half an hour.

A brutal reminder of what the mountains we send the riders up can do.

Poor Taaramäe, that's a nightmare.

BTW, is Frank Zappa holding him at the last pic?

nevermind, I can't download it now, I'm about to turn off. Thanks anyway. ;)

There's actually a couple of minutes in that vid on that stage. I'll keep it in seed for the next couple of weeks for you. It's really worth it.

/Almost forgot about that Xorret del Cati stage. That was cruel. Felt actually physically hurt just looking at it.

The way Scarponi cracked after trying to follow Contador on Etna at the '11 Giro was pretty dramatic, although I can't rewatch the video just now. Seem to remember it was just like someone flicked a switch and turned his legs off. He didn't lose that much time though.

probably the most shocking and spectacular was big mig's cracking on les arcs...
after 5 years of total annihilation, here comes the 7th stage of 1996 tour
everything seemed to be just ok after madeleine and cormet de roselend where he responded good to zulle's attack.
hell broke out on les arcs, not a difficult climb, especially for indurain.your usual indurain who could go at above 500 watts could not do more than 300.that's what i call cracking.

just a little bit earlier on cormet de roselend, the maillot jaune heulot was forced to abandon crying.he seemed to ride in the red following the leaders for way too long time and that's what happens when you push your body in such a barbaric mode.

this stage is probably one of the greatest in le tour's history.
you can find it here,i think it's more than 4-5 hours in spanish.

What a terrific thread!
I'm home with a cold and what better way to spend the day than looking at clips of epic racing. It's been awhile and the adrenaline of watching a race feels great.

I'm reflecting on the amount of pain and suffering that Ullrich went through during his tours. Except for his win I can't think of many that went his way...
a true champion in my mind anyway.
