WielerRevue spoke with Zonneveld about the UCI and his own ambitions to become a board member one day. "The UCI seems like hell to me. Before I would get in there, I would first have to gain some patience somewhere... That is the sad thing in almost every sports association."
Zonneveld feels like to achieve anything, you need to be someone very powerful, someone a regular sportsmen can hardly ever become. "The bigger the sports association, the more power managers there are at the top. People who have nothing to do with the sport itself. People in halls who have absolutely nothing to do with that one newcomer who wonders whether he should continue with the sport."

Heavy bureaucracy and so many formal procedures, Zonneveld finds it hard to find his place in the organization at the moment: "They are so far removed from the sport, which makes it difficult for me to hold my own there. That is where it often goes wrong, that people with a passion for the sport drop out."

Should the sport really be putting off potential sponsors by forbidding their corporate colour scheme?

I would hope that red, yellow, blue, pink etc would still be allowed, so long as the colours are sufficiently obviously broken up to not be confused with leaders' jerseys.

Who are these judges that have difficult identifying the riders due to the jersey? I have never even heard that before.

On the safety issue, dark/black raincoats should be replaced with orange or yellow color, or team raincoats should be similar to the dominant shade of team kits.

Previous rule:

A classification leader’s jersey in stage races must be sufficiently distinct from those of the teams and clubs, as well as from national jerseys, world champions' jerseys and those of leaders of UCI cups, series and classification leaders.
Conversely, concerning road cycling and more specifically for “grands tours” only, it shall be the teams that are required to differentiate their jersey from that of individual general classification leader’s jersey.

New rule:

Organisers are responsible for ensuring that the leader’s jerseys for all classifications in stage races, whether compulsory or not, are sufficiently distinct from those of the teams and clubs, as well as from national jerseys, world champions' jerseys and those of leaders of UCI cups, series or other rankings.
As an exception, teams shall be responsible for ensuring that their jerseys are sufficiently different from the leaders’ jerseys for the individual general classification, points classification, king of mountain classification and youth classification in Grand Tours and events of the UCI Women’s WorldTour identified by the UCI.
The obligation incumbent on teams shall be subject to organisers publishing information regarding their leaders’ jerseys at least six months prior to the relevant event.

So I think it is only for the GTs and that the essential change is that clashes with other classification jerseys, not just GC, are to be avoided. But another chronically unclear piece of rule-writing from the UCI.

Given that kits are announced, and raced in, more than 6 months before the Tour or Vuelta, what's to stop the teams having a kit in red or yellow and claiming that ASO hadn't made an announcement about what colours they were using. That's why I don't believe it can be a rule to apply to kits all year.

But that hasn't been happening at all: it's almost as though the UCI don't know, or don't know how to apply, their own rules.

World tour teams already have to submit their designs to UCI for approval before each seasons change, but tour organisers only having to submit theirs six months before their race sems to be not solving a problem but just creating one.

When it has to do with the organization’s jersey destinations, it seems like this is more about brand protection than anything else.

This policy should be per race rather than across a season so long as jerseys stay close to the team's original branding. ie: it wouldn't be good for a team to start wearing yellow jerseys for the remainder of the season becasue one of their riders won that year's Tdf.

And once you outbid Skoda for the right to sponsor that, I'm sure they will accommodate that. Until then, I think it will have to remain a preference rather than a demand.

All of these UCI rules seem so complicated. Every team sport has different kits within the same team, it's nothing new.

Surely, that would basically be what Visma would need to do. They've long needed to have an alternative jersey for the Tour, now - starting next year - they'll need one for P-N and Dauphiné as well.
(Of course, that'll mean they can't do the big branding thingy leading up to the Tour.)
