Well, you know how it is. It's an arms race.

The Tour has the advantage of attracting peoples of many different nationalities, with different sensibilities as to how embarrassingly you can dress to appear on TV. California has the advantage of a developing cycling culture, where many take the freak show they see at the Tour as the norm.

The running about in the Euro man-kini banana hammock is definitely a Euro invention. NOBODY in So Cal wears a Speedo in public (well, maybe Greg Louganis)...

Granted, our man-kini banana hammock technology is more advanced at the moment, but I swear I saw a fried egg running alongside Horner in Cali, and we don't have anything like that here. I'm afraid we have a mutual assured destruction scenario in our hands.

This spring, a friend of mine said he was planning to go to the alps for these stages, and asked if I wanted to come. I thought about it for a minute, and declined. I've never been to one of these stages, but, honestly, they way it looks to me, I'd rather watch it on television. As much as these costumed baffoons annoy me now, it would be unbearable to have them running about in front of me.

During the 2009 or 2010 ToC (can't remember which) during a stage that ended in Santa Cruz there were 5 guys in speedos running along with the peloton. Happened right outside the west entrance to UC Santa Cruz on Empire Grade. And it was cold

OK, more Central Cal than So Cal, but.....

As a so Cal life long resident. I won't claim that we don't have our share of nuts. I do think the Cali nuts copied the Tour nuts. We were not the original nuts. We may have added a few more characters, but we are not the original. We just made it a bit more bizarre. Our unemployment rate is high, so we have time on our hands.

I will admit that there is a post christmas speedo run thru an outdoor mall here in so Cal...the weather is usually 68 degrees, so not bad, but the Euro's do beat us at wearing speedos at all water related places! Have you never heard of a board short? Some people need to keep their private parts private!!

I was also thinking that at a couple places if a rider wanted to accelerate, or pass another rider they would have had a hard time, as the crowd was so close.

Glad AC pushed the idiot.

LOL, yea but its the thought behind that force that counts. And that pic sure makes him look like a tough guy.

the funny thing about all these idiots on the climbs is that as I was watching the race, my wife who is the biggest non sports fan in the world, is pointing them out to me cause I dont see them, cause I am watching the race and she is watching the idiots.

Too true. I've had similar experiences with family. Bad image for the sport. A few more gendarmes would be nice, but I am sure they had them maxed out on the Alpe. The barriers started at 4k, further down than in years past?

I saw Antler Boy yelled at at this year's TOC - "Go Home! Nobody likes you!"
