Thomas Casarotto gravely injured in Giro del Friuli Venezia Giulia

The method of death reminds me of Evans almost hitting a van on the mortirolo descent. It didnt seem that fast at the time but could have killed him to. It just shows how dangerous this thing of ours can be. I understand people might die crashing into a mountain but there shouldnt be parked cars on races. This was a preventable death. Hope organisers learn to clean traffic from riders paths.

very bad news. Cycling has had enough bad news over the last few years.

When will italian race organisers stop cars from being parked on courses. :( (not saying its only italian races but it does seem to be more of a problem in italy)

According to tuttobici he is still alive in intensive care, but in serious condition.

edit to add quote:

Contrariamente a quanto comunicato da alcuni organi di informazione la Generali Uc Arcobaleno Mestre precisa che Thomas Casarotto versa in gravi condizioni nel reparto di terapia intensiva dell'ospedale Santa Maria della Misericordia di Udine, ma è ancora in vita.

Thanks for that hopefully good news update pugdog.

By the way, if you post quotes here from other internet sources, you must also give the html link to the internet page where you got it from.

It's from here, if anyone needs it. [They picked a rather unfortunate photo for the story].

EDIT:
Thomas Casarotto (20)[+Picture] went in a coma on Friday, September 10, 2010 at 22:00 hour, after a crash in the 3rd stage of the giro ciclistico del Friuli Venezia Giulia while being in the GC lead. Casarotto was considered a great Italian cycling promise. [CN].

"This is good news for the family, we wish them all the best"

Tuttobici had it wrong and also changed the story now.

Would be great if he could come back from death. Recent developments (death to coma) are a step in the right direction

We have a good record in this as well. Lots of cyclists come back from close to death. THat eritrean DAOTEC mentions Lavenir thread is another on top of the more known ones.

To be fair to DAOTEC the story did break from Italy 3 hours ago that Casarotto had succcumed to his injuries.

Obviously Casarotto's injuries are serious, but where there is life there is hope.

Either way, I feel badly for his parents, the rest of his friends, and his family. Hope he pulls through.

Yep i was thinking of Contador, Lance + that eritrean among others.

Anyone know how quick the medical services were to get to him? Often when in comas, that determines life vs vegetative state. Since it was a race im assuming it would have been quite quick?

He's one of the most talented young climbers in Norway. He usually doesn't win anything, but he's pretty good nonetheless. Obviously, this win isn't really worth much though...hope casarotto will be okay.

¿¿ 'hanging between life and death' ¿¿

showimg.php

Another day went buy for Thomas Casarotto, the rider from [Generali Uc Arcobaleno Mestre], still in a deep coma in ICU Hospital of Udine, however, gives no signs of recovery.

The situation for the whole day was unchanged compared to what is stated yesterday and the night: Thomas continues to live with the help of machines but the brain damage seen with the latest scan, at least for now, do not allow any movement or surgery according to the groupe of specialists combined in a medical team.

The latest bulletin, issued late this afternoon announced that Thomas Casarotto conditions remain exstremely desperate, and the general opinion about Thomas is, that the Vicenza boy is brain death.

Now the most important decision has been awarded to a council of three, of Italians highest profiled docters in this area to deside to pull the plug.

Meanwhile the heart broken parents of Thomas don't give up hope against all odds, even from the bureaucratic point of view, they are advocating for a possible transplantation of organs that would at least, or otherwise save other lives.

"Time passes and we unfortunately can do little to help Thomas," said president Mauro Flora "at the bottom there is still hope, but is fading away by the hour". All we want is to enter that room and see Thomas open his eyes and make us smile again, we hope at least the docters will allow our Thomas to continue to breath.

No comment just tears and a little prair for this
