Tips for Giro fan

This summer I will be going to Milan for the final 3 (or possibly 4) stages of the Giro with my twin brother (who interestingly enough is a huge pro cycling fan despite not knowing how to ride a bike). I have never actually seen a cycling race in person and was wondering what to expect and if people had tips for to help me get the best possible viewing experience.
thanks

Which stages are you aiming to see?

Anyway I'd try to go at the start rather than finish as you might catch up with the pros while they are waiting to start.

Seeing stage 18 (mixed, break away or mass spring), 19 and 20 (Mountains) and 21 (Milan ITT). I would have never though the start would be interesting and will try to see that part on stage 18.
thanks

Get a detailed map of the road set up for the area the last few stages are in. then pick what you think would be a great vantage point. in the mountains somewhere on the last mountain of the stage tends to be the best. but be prepared to arrive early and leave late. the roads get closed 2/3 hours before the peloton arrives on the flat stages and more on the mountain stages. bring a large lunch, spare jumper and capes for weather changes in the mountains.

make sure to take a camera and shoot lots of pics to post here afterwards.

enjoy and don't start running up the mountains in front of riders:rolleyes:

I have made the trip a couple of times done things different both times. I stayed in Bergamo and Ballsano and really enjoyed it. If you bring bikes make sure you bring a lock, also if you can switch to SPD pedals so you can get on and off the bike often and walk. I have seen flat and mtn stages and like both equally. You can ask anybody w a caravan if you can lock your bike to the bumper and the answer is always yes. Pancho for rain, dry shorts, sun block hat and water. I made something to eat and brought it in a back pack..once you are at a location you have to stay there for a few hours.4+ so make sure you have what you need..even TP. Milan has awesome trains so you can get near a stage and hitch hike wo much problem but you have to leave at dawn or before. Bike give you some flexibility but they are also super hard to move in crowded areas and mine was a source of worry. If I go back I will walk everywhere. Torino and Trento areas is spectacular
