Tony Martin and the hour record?

Setting the record just isn't worth what he could lose by missing important events during his training period. And to invest all that time and effort and not set the record? That would just be a massive fail.

Wut? Wait...isn't that exactly what he did today? The 1hr TT? It is just he was on the road, and not going around and around a track. He should just get on a bike in the next week, and do a 1hr test on the track and see what happens. It is still his speciality, TTs.

Tony would smash the records of Boradmann and Obree on a regular bike:D
Do Brits really wanna see this?:D

As a Brit, I'd like to see anyone beat Sosenka's discredited record.

Personally, I think Bert Grabsch might be a good guy to go for it as he's an out and out TT specialist (so has no other big ambitions) and churning a huge gear on a track might suit him more than some of the others.

Or do what indurain did, win tdf give it a few weeks then set a new mark. I guess the tryhards have now pushed the mark so far you have to start training for it at age 9.

Ok Tony might have a slight problem acheiving the 1st part of that analogy.

Didn't Merckx say the hour record took two years off his life span as a pro cyclist or something or was that someone else? I don't think you can just go out on the track and expect to set a record even if you're a TT monster like Cancellara or Martin.

There just needs to be a decent cash prize for it. If I had the $$$ I would turn it into an annual event, a 2 day shoot out between 6 or 8 riders.

Fastest rider of the weekend gets 25% of the max cash prize fund. If you break the record you get full 100%. Prize money isn't so great in pro cycling that a decent some of money won't attract riders.

Put points, derny or scratch races on inbetween the main riders, get music pumping. Put bands on in the centre of the track. Make it a proper festival of cycling and speed.

Somehow I think having 6 to 8 x solo one hour rides on a track isn't going to draw the crowds, no matter the riders involved or what you do in between attempts. It's not like a road TT where you can set them off at 2-minute intervals and be done in one go.

No, it's track cycling. Very similar, but different enough that he'd need some specific training. And it's not like Boardman was a random schmuck either. Back when he first beat the hour record LeMond said everybody thought they could beat him, because seriously, Boardman? But he added they'd be shocked when he beat them in the TdF prologue, which he did a year later.

There is always something you can do to draw the crowds. Bet you Kraftwerk would be happy to play for an hour

Hour record could be good but I dont know.. Its kind of dull when you think about it.

So we have Sosenka holding the mens record and the womens hour record held by an aging Longo at altitude.
Does Tony Martin want to associate himself with riders like that? For the record Bobridge could do a decent hour record I reckon with his track expertise.

Does Martin want to associate him self with the likes of Jan Ullrich? That's like saying someone's a doper because the palmares of the race includes some dopers.

Yeah, who'd want to be associated with riders like Baldini, Coppi, Anquetil, Merckx, Moser, Rominger, Indurain, Boardman?

Maybe not but the hour record is is probably a relic of the past that should be left alone.
Wiggins could have a reasonable go at it also but it counts for nothing in the end. Track racing is about the 4 k and 4k team pursuit not some person or TT specialist going round and around for an hour IMO.
