It's almost as if Van Aert races such finales perfectly to set up the attack of others, only to stand with his Richard in his hand and look around afterwards.
He won't be the one to make the decisive move. He waits in sprints for someone to start the sprint. He waits in breaks for someone to start the move. Sure, there is probably nobody there who will work with him in a small break, but at some point, he needs to dare to break everyone and ride off alone, or sprint from the front.

Wout wants a stage.

Reasonable people can agree or not that they should support it, but it's that simple.
Everybody knows Wout badly wants a stage.
(that's why he got cheated in the break).
With such an important stage as of tomorrow I read it as a less confidentWvA that he will be able to participate making the difference in the upcoming days and has spoken to the team about it. I almost expect that, as every man must be completely fresh for the next few days so that there will be any chance to test the cracks that Jonas has not yet given up on finding at Pogi.

But okay you might be right, and it comes down to much simpler things: It's Wout.

...aah just in time finally time for 100% stagd watching!

Absolutely. If I was the DS, I would love to get Wout a stage because he's a big part of the team's success. And later, he cannot complain because the team gave him support and every opportunity.
He certainly has no complaint today...Lemmen however, I would be p!ssed off to have wasted that much gas for nothing.
