I think I remember reading somewhere that Barguil was frustrated they weren't bringing him to the Tour. Could be wrong though.

I read that in l'Equipe and as they are pretty well informed regarding Frenchies, I would say he stays home

Barguil wrote it on his own website. Giant-Shimano won't take him to the Tour, last minute changes may however change this.
http://www.warrenbarguil.fr/pas-tour-france-ete/

He's young (22) and eager, but it's a logical decision for Giant-Shimano to focus on their strong point, sprinting. He surely knows that, but from a political point of view, it's a good strategy to show his discomfort with that decision as it might tempt Giant-Shimano to extend and upgrade his contract, to secure his future with the team. That extension probably comes with some TdF guarantees for the future. However, I'm not sure if Giant-Shimano wants that, as they do not have a GC-culture.

I doubt it, he didn't have anyone to ride for in the mountains last year, this Tour there'll be Spilak, Rodriguez, and maybe even Moreno shooting for stage and or GC, (they say they aren't doing GC, but i really don't believe that, especially for Spilak). Even if none are shooting for GC, I can't see Katusha saying, "don't bother working for these guys, have a crack at anonymously cracking the top 15".

Moreno won't start, it's official. Ekimov and Konyshev have said that Purito will be the only Spaniard in the team.

Thanks for the input everyone!

Just to clarify something I indicated earlier, what I'm ultimately planning to do with this list as June race results come in and rosters are finalized, is fine it down to 22 riders, one from each team, in an effort to predict which rider on each team will finish highest on GC. I realize I screwed up in the thread title and my original post in describing them as "captains"--a romantic's notion--but have since been convinced by you good people to refine my efforts. After all, every team won't be riding for GC or have a clear-cut GC captain, but every team (assuming they have at least one rider finish the Tour) will have a highest-placed rider in the final GC, whether they want to or not. :)

As far as I know Moreno won't be doing the Tour. Let's say Purito will be the captain in the mountains, while Kristoff will be the captain on flat stages, with Spilak having a free role. So I agree with your last sentence. Although did you see how is Spilak riding in Dauphine? He's nowhere to be seen. He needs to show something if he wants that role. On the other hand Trofimov had a fantastic win yesterday, showing that he is in good form.

Ok, he definitely showed something today:D. Great stage for him.

Suggestion: Please edit and clarify in the OP tht its GC rider you are looking for. also, update the list in OP, or give a link to the updated list there.

Will do. I'm working on editing the race to include notable 2014 results and some other stuff. I'll house the latest version in the first post of the thread, as you've suggested, and keep a log of changes going forward. Thanks!

Okay, I've updated the original (first) post in this thread with the latest version of the list. I included some more information about each rider, including the number of CQ points they've earned so far in the 2014 season over how many racing days, and notable results thus far.

The latest version of the list will be housed in the first post of this thread, and I'll post further messages reflecting changes made as June race results, final rosters, and great suggestions from you folks continue to come in.

This latest version removed Sylvain Chavenel and Warren Bargueil, removed Alexander Kristoff in favor of Simon Spilak, and removed Arnaud Gerard in favor of Eduardo Sepúlveda.

And for those who don't want to wade through all that data in the first post, here's the short version of the current list.

Edited the first post to reflect additional race days for those crossing the finish lines at Gippingen and La Mure today, and to add points and results notes reflecting the nice wins by "Captains" Geschke and Spilak. There were some other minor points changes for those who finished high in today's Dauphiné stage as well.

Just wasn't trying earlier, no surprises there. Seems Moreno confirmed out, good decision I think he's struggled after his crash all year.

I don't think Simon Gerrans has any GC ambitions. I don't think he cares if he finishes 31st or 91st. He wants to win stages, I would expect.

I believe he is trying to name a GC guy from each team even though not every team will necessarily have a GC candidate, thus you have some guys like Gerrans on the list.

Yep, that's pretty much it. As I said upthread, somebody has to come in highest on GC from each team, even if they're not working for it. I'd be happy to list somebody else from Orica GreenEdge if somebody else from that team is likely to come in higher than Gerrans.
