Thanks for bringing this thread back.

If the races are run well, I think there's very good long-term potential for races like Gila, Tour of Utah, Cascade Classic, etc. to end up as UCI races. We'll see...
Agreed. I probably shouldn't reopen this chestnut but this is the type of race the UCI should be looking at to extend their presence beyond Europe, along with others like Turkey, Oman, San Luis and Langkawi.

Not "manufactured" races like Beijing, Qatar, USPCC and (to some extent) ATOC.

One would think it was an even more impressive effort by the young Dombrowski - he's 19 as well (though turning 20 in eight days) and even though he seems a bit fragile, he's a great climber.

I don't get this. Compared to Oman the Tour of Qatar is already a long-lasting classic. ;)

And no, I don't want to see the Tour of the Gila upgraded to any category higher than 2.1 - I just don't want to see all those boring riders/teams you already see in every other WT race. Gila should stay a domestic race with only few foreign teams (especially from Latin America). Further upgrades would change the whole character of the race, with more infrastructure needed etc. - it should stay just like it is. :)

Silver City is a pretty small town a long way from anything else. Having LA etc in 09 and 10 stretched the capacity of the infrastructure, can't imagine higher than 2.1.

To the race: Armstrong back to 09 form when she cleaned up without a team. Her only risk is leaving it all out on the road in the TT and being vulnerable to an attack on Sunday. Don't know how Sutherland time trials, but he's probably looking over his shoulder at Baldwin and Mancebo, at least. Young Joe Dombrowski could surprise----

Sutherland has been a more then decent TT rider back in his Rabo years. The decisive stage will be the Gila Monster, as always.

it wouldn't surprise me to see mancebo do a better itt than sutherlandf though. mancebo developped into amazing itt rider and sprinter in usa

results of 2nd stage:

1 Eric Young (USA) Bissell Cycling 3:04:25
2 Francisco Mancebo (Spa) Competitive Cyclist Racing Team
3 Chad Beyer (USA) Competitive Cyclist Racing Team
4 Anibal Borrajo (Arg) Jamis-Sutter Home
5 Hector Rangel (Mex) Mexican National Team
6 Marc De Maar (AHo) UnitedHealthcare
7 Jesse Goodrich (USA) Juwi Solar
8 Fred Rodriguez (USA) Team Exergy
9 Georg Preidler (Aut) Team Type 1 - Sanofi
10 Rory Sutherland (Aus) UnitedHealthcare

OK, presuming no major changes from the crit, the Gila Monster should be a cracker, with CC and Livestrong (and maybe Bissel) trying to knock off Sutherland. It's a tricky course - the last long climb ends with about 15 miles to go, after that its bumpy but only gets hard in the last 500 meters, not enough to get a lot of time.. I would look for some attacks on the Sapillo.

Oh yes, hear Phinney won at some race in Italy, Chapeau.

Nice stage yesterday, Craddock looks to have a bright future, and Sutherland just keeps on winning. Wish Paco would have done better, but he is always a great climber, and local guy Tyler Wren did a pretty good job.

Congrats to Armstrong for winning as well.

Was a great race as always, look like people had a great time watching it.
