Training in NYC

Hi, I'm from Brazil, I`ll be living in NY for 3 months and I`m looking for good places to train around here. I don't mean to train inside the city, I want to find some roads or bike lanes that are long enough for a good ride, with no lights or stop signs. Just a place where I could ride for a few hours without having to stop every time.

Also, where I live (Sao Paulo) there's a bunch training every sunday in a road, actually it's like a race, only a training race, but very high pace and a sprint at the end, and the bunch usually start with 40 riders or so. Is there something similar to that around here? I really wanted to go riding with some people from here, it's allways good to ride with other people, at least once a week.

If anyone can help me with that, and also with any kind of tips you might find useful, I'll be very grateful.

Thanks!

Bear Mountain to George Washington is the most common. You can do several variations on that heading further north or east if you like. Metro North allow bikes on the trains, but you need to get a permit--costs a few dollars at Grand Central. As Mew said, you'll find groups going some days.

In theory the entire perimeter of Manhattan should be bikable with only a few lights and crossings, but it was still some ways from completion the last time I tried it.

For flat riding you can also go out around the perimeter of Brooklyn, onto the Rockaways and then into Long Beach, onto Long Island etc. Much of that can also be done without lights if you pick up an area map with the marked routes. Out towards Jones Beach there's a small cars only interchange between parkways that you have to cross with the bike, other than that it's possible to stay on designated routes without too much in the way of interruptions.
