According to Jornal Ciclismo, Javier Ramirez Abeja, the experienced journeyman of the Spanish scene, formerly of Liberty Seguros, Astana and Andalucía, has signed for Radio Popular-Onda ahead of the Volta a Portugal. The 35 year old had his most successful year to date last year, winning the Tour of Azerbaijan (the one in Iran) and also taking stages in the Ruta del Sol and the Vuelta a Chile, however with Andalucía dropping to the amateur ranks he remained with the squad, unable to find a pro ride until now.
Also, former Cervélo and Lotto man Óscar Pujol earlier tweeted that he's now a professional cyclist again, although neglected to confirm any further details. He had to drop a level last season and was racing for the Azad University Cross team, winning and podiuming several races in Indonesia as well as being 6th in the Azerbaijan Tour (again, the Iranian one), but has spent most of this year doing endurance MTB, and doing fairly well at it too.
Other news gleaned from Jornal includes an as yet nascent plan for
FC Porto to produce a cycling team in the near future; the President of Sporting Clube de Portugal is alleged in the comments to also have an interest but there's no official word on that. Also, Carmim (Tavira) have apparently picked up a new title sponsorship deal from a sizable bank (rumours point to Banco BIC) which should safeguard them as I was beginning to worry for their future, having gone from the strongest team in Portugal 18 months ago to haemorrhaging top riders left and right.
