UCI Sporting Criterion Ranking

I know there is a lot of confusion regarding the newly implemented system where team strength is determined by a special ranking, the details of which have been unclear to a lot of people (eventhough all the details were leaked as early as May last year.

Cyclingnews published the system again a few months ago. http://www.cyclingnews.com/features/exclusive-uci-proteam-ranking-system-revealed

The main difficulty with this ranking is that it is based on a special WT ranking where all the pro continental riders are present and Continental rankings where all the WT riders are present which is normally not the case. This means that you can't use the normal rankings to figure out the points for a rider.

Another important thing is that for the sporting criterion the actual points in the WT and Continental rankings does not matter at all. All that matters is what place you end up in and based on that you are given a score.

Now, on top of all the points that riders get from these special rankings they also get points from various other wins throughout the season. The points for winning can easily be calculated and that is what I have done.

This is a ranking of the collected extra points for 2011 for the purpose of the sporting criterion ranking (For brevity it only shows riders that have scored 8 points or more.):

One thing that becomes absolutely clear is how important it is to win to score well in the sporting criterion ranking. If you have two riders that finish say 15th and 16th in the extended WT ranking but one of them got there by finishing 2-5th in a lot of races and the other one got there by winning races instead then they would both get the 65 points for finishing 11th-20th but the one that got there by winning is possibly worth more than twice as much because of all the extra points given for wins.

One thing to note is that for the overall ranking of teams the ranking takes into accout the points scored by their top 15 riders during the past 2 years (2011 and 2010 for next year) so this ranking is only a limited insight into what certain riders are worth. It's missing the points for last year and of course the points for the year end rankings.
