I must say I do miss seeing guys fighting it out in the one day races for the World Cup jersey. I can see why it was abandoned (in a way), but it really did promote better racing, because there was something to get for racing more one day races. I miss the days where you had guys like Tchmil, Museeuw, Duclos-Laselle, Baldato, Bartoli and the like gunning for the jersey.

I did expect to see Philippe Gilbert at the top of the list before I opened the thread. I just watched the footage of Giro di Lombardia last night and he's just too strong at the moment.

why is that?

All points systems for a season of races are never that prestigious and no rider goes out and tries to win it. Unless there is a considerable prize, it will never work.

Looking at the world cup point system. Does it reflect the best riders of the year? No. points systems never really are accurate.

Actually, it does reflect the best rider in the classics, which kinda is the whole point of that ranking. Gilbert, Cancellara and Freire were the best in those and are on top of that ranking. It isn't supposed to show the best rider in all races, just in a selection of important one day races. And it does the job.

You'd better not tell that to those guys on the track that are in some strange event called the Points Race.

Who needs points to determine the winner of the Green or Polkadot Jersey? It should just be determined by the first person across the line on the last sprint, or the last mountain, right?

We should do away with those pesky world rankings that the UCI has for professional road racers. No one needs to know who's won or placed high and consistently in races during the season. No one wants to be world number one. Screw that noise!

Seriously dude - i realise you're only 16 (otherwise, why would you register with the number 94 in your username), but go and find someone who has a pile of old cycling magazines from the late 80s through to the late 90s, and read about some really interesting editions of the races you've come to follow, and see that things like the UCI World Cup DID work, and riders DID think it was prestigious.

?? Looking at Dekker_Tifosi's virtual World Cup, I think it does. But you have to keep in mind it's not about the best rider of the year but the best classics rider. It always has been. And as mentioned before the classics giants really made an objective of winning the this prestigeous ranking, unlike the protour ranking. Fondriest, Museeuw, Tchmil, Bartoli etc rode every WC race from Sanremo to the AGR (after LBL back then)

Adding to this, the reason the World Cup worked was that it was a classics competition. The reason the UCI world ranking doesn't work is that it tries to cover everything, making it impossible for any rider to target it all, but since it excludes all non-Pro Tour races it's also not as good as the CQ ranking at what it tries to do.

+1. There should be a reward for consistency and for the "other" (some would say "better") face of cycling. Give or take the odd one or two lacunae, the list corresponds to the most exciting, aggressive, interesting riders out there, for my money. It also recognises a lot of tough riding done by riders like Kolobnev, Leukemans and Hammond.

Just because the World Cup uses points it doesn't mean it tries to find the best rider of the season. What is does is determines the winner of the World Cup and that was a prestigious competition in itself to win.

Another thing that it does is increase the prestige of the individual races involved. Today all focus is on the five monuments and all other classics are left further behind in prestige and even attention by some teams. Take a race like Paris-Tours which had some teams show up with their C-lineup. That would never have happened when the race was a World Cup race. Even Classica San Sebastian gets less attention nowadays than it did before.

i used to love the old world cup, fully agree with all the positive comments about it. it also had an additional benefit that there was genuine interest in who won the sprint for 7th place, instead of today: the winner has gone, let's all sit up. the downside was the occasional negative tactics in the last couple of races by overall winners needing low placings and no accidents.

protour has some good features, but unfortunately has made competition in the classics less interesting.

It's so completely obvious you only have been following cycling for a very short time ACF, if you don't know what the world cup is and argue that "it wouldn't work"

Yes and no. Followed races for a while but never had really bothered about World Cup. At least other posters don't shut someone down for not knowing something and explain it to me. If it's about the best classics rider, I find some of the rankings a bit questionable.

ACF, whatever you may lack in "time served" you certainly make up for in enthusiasm. No-one can doubt that!

It would be fun to see a ral fight between Cancellara and Gilbert for an overall World Cup victory. I'm sure Cancellara could get some points in for example Amsgel Gold Race, Vattenfall Cyclassic and Paris-Tours for example if he was chasing points. Then again Gilbert would be doing the same.

Boonen was awesome too, he just didn't win :(
