USAPCC Stage 1: Salida to Crested Butte 159.9km (23/8/2011)

Stage 1 of this inaugural race takes the peloton on mostly wide open US and Colorado State highways from the whitewater capitol of the mountain west (Salida), over Monarch Pass (the first of four crossings of the Continental Divide), through one of the coldest towns in the USA (Gunnison) to the mining town of Crested Butte and the ski station of Mt Crested Butte.

That's the town of Crested Butte! Extreme skiing, and gnarly mountain biking are what this town is all about; that and mesmerizing and perplexing women. In fact, the shaved legs of the Pro Peloton might cause this town pause... Then again, the scent of petuli oil might cause the peloton to stop short. (just kidding folks…)

This is, unfortunately (and of no fault of the beautiful towns of CB) the only (quasi) Mountain Top Finish. The final climb is short, and not steep. Its altitude however (above 2700m) may cause difficulties; and there is an interesting quirk to this stage. Look at the profile closely.

Yes, there is a sprint in Crested Butte just before the short final uphill stretch. Note also that this sprint comes after a long stretch of gradual downhill along the Tomichi followed by a long stretch of gradual uphill along the Gunnison/East rivers. As the write-up from the official site notes,
…competitors will have to decide which line to expend their energy racing for – because both will be impossible in a finish like this one.

Here is the color coordinated profile showing gradients:

I suspect that the sprinter’s teams will animate this stage trying to keep the inevitable break in check; up until the final climb that is. This will be a difficult stage; the peloton will essentially shatter on the northern edge of Crested Butte. It will be a nasty sprint to the finish animated by those not expecting to do well in Thursday’s uphill ITT – and who still have enough oxygen in their bloodstream.

I wonder if Gooby will blow the race apart on that first climb, they certainly didn't hold back in Utah.

Why so early that first climb. I'm afraid it won't make any difference for the GC.
it is the inaugural race. Four of the climbs ridden this tour will be used as MTF's if the race is successful and continues..

Evans ftw...
Looks ideal for Cuddles. The sprinters' teams won't be trying to control this one, but those with the GC favourites. There'll be plenty of guys dropping off the back on that seemingly eternal false flat after the main climb and descent. Maybe 40-50 guys in the peloton at the bottom of the last climb. There won't be much time between the top riders at the finish (around 10-15 in the lead group).

Another great preview. Thanks again, Ben

As many have noted, the route could have been designed with a more exciting route. Politics and logistics, all come into play, unfortunately. There was a rally in Boulder a few days ago expressing support to bring a stage there next year. Someone familiar with the logistics got up and gave a great explanation of what is required to route a stage and have a certain city/town to host a finish. All sorts of things come into play including hotel rooms, and what not .....

Edit: I just noticed that the first small climb before they hit Monarch Pass is the reverse of the route for the ACA Salida road race climb from a few years ago, I think the name was Weldon Creek or something like that. Seems that they changed the course since then, though ...

Edit 2 (add to the Stage 2 thread yet to be created?): Three bear attacks this weekend near Aspen.
......officials are especially worried about further bear attacks because thousands of campers are expected this week to see a stage of the U.S. Pro Cycling Challenge from Gunnison to Aspen.

I dont know who will chase the break. If it comes back together Henao ftw with Evans just behind, and the other favorites a few seconds behind Evans.

Oh man. They're on really high altitude in this race. That means some riders will be nowhere near normal level for that reason alone. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw some surprising subpar performances by good riders in this race. This is not something that cyclists are generally used to.

I'm going to hijack my own thread for a moment. I was out snapping shots of Rabbit Ears Pass today - it is the first obstacle of stage 5. Some folks pulled in behind me as I was walking down the road. A honk of the horn alerted me that something was amiss. Standing in the middle of the road, I snapped the shot of what I Initially thought was a wayward pup, only to realize that it was a bear, and the guy honking the horn was trying to get his wife back in the car.

Nice finish for Cadel. With the high altitude the guys who can't climb will be shelled out the back quite quickly.

Oh I don't know, with one of those bears on the wheel, I reckon you'd see some of those sprinters turn into climbers pretty quickly, even Levi might be prompted to take a turn on the front :p

yep nice preview.
i'm very curious how much oxygen have the europeans in their blood because i think gobernacion will go hard even in that long drag before the final climb.
my pick is giovanni baez,it looks like him and suarez have really good form.

I agree about their form and think they will be good tomorrow and in the uphill time trial. Regarding today's stage, I don't think they are as good in uphill sprints as Evans or Henao.
