Ciccone needs a stronger team in the Vuelta to compete in the overall against Vingegaard and Almeifa, Vine and Ayuso. At Burgos, his lieutenant was an 18 yo trackster, who has just recovered from injury but did far better than the Trek veterans. The guy should be allowed to race in the Vuelta instead at Tour de L'Avenir.
I certainly don't know the history behind a decision like that, personally I couldn't see any long-term physical damage for an 18year old, already elite athlete competing in a long race like the Vuelta if there was some type of hyper exaggerated recovery, possibly weeks off the bike post race.
l'Avenir distances are little shorter and race duration, therefore overall elevation changes are less. Even though I love Ciccone as a bike racer, Trek went from a team I liked to a team I question in competency from management after TDF.
With or without an 18year old phenom working for him at the Vuelta, Trek will likely come up short to help Ciccone contest overall victory. A great racer like Bauke Mollema really has nothing more to give, his performance has been in state of steep decline over last 2 years..riders like Vacek who might be out completely, Carlos Verona could maybe be of use, but how much. Lopez has not shown much all year.
I know that you hear and read daily about everything has changed, everything is about some version of youth movement, but there must be a serious downside to starting 18 year olds at grand tours otherwise they would do it..often.. Even if you prorated the race, have the guy race @40-60% of the total distance and drop out, there must be something bad long-term.I don't know.. Best solution I see for Ciccone is to transfer to Quickstep..lol..
