Wait a sec...the peloton waited for BMC?

Just finished watching the stage. Happy for LLS and Sagan, and don't care for any of the riders chasing the Sky duo for GC. Sorry, but if Mark Cavendish is leading the peloton for the lower slopes of the second Cat 1 climb of the day, nobody deserves the win except for Wiggins or Froome.

That said, do the race officials have evidence of the tacks? Like, the actual tacks that caused all the punctures? And who put the tack magnets in any wheel that Evans used? Interesting that the tacks were on the uphill and the downhill.

I have my doubts that tacks were strewn about the road, especially with all the fans who could have been witnesses to it. However, I will defer to those much closer to the action.

Anyway, did I really see that the peloton waited for BMC? BMC??? The team that waits for nobody? Wow.

Nibali said very clearly they are not just waiting for Evans or BMC, about 40 people are affected by tacks( that is the a fact). It is just BMC is chasing hard after the peloton.

There are photographs of many tacks.

It wasn't just Evans, guys on Sky, RSNT, etc. also had problems.

There are interviews of riders not on BMC saying there were tacks.

It's been widely reported that there were tacks.

And you came on here to suggest that Evans is so good at lying that he caused about 30 riders to subliminally believe that they had flats too, when they really didn't, or something?

Seriously, what is your point with this thread? There were tacks.

EDIT: Oh, and it was Evans' back wheel first, then again, then his front wheel, so his front wheel probably got stuck pretty early and just took longer to show the damage.

I have come to apologize for the implications I stated in the original post.

I have now read and caught up on the race thread. I have gotten some additional information from online news outlets that there were tacks/sharp objects in the road. I was going on the NBCSports coverage and post race interview with Hincapie. *He* didn't see any tacks, and there is no way in the world that I am relying on Paul Sherwen as a primary source of information without confirmation.

So going forward the race caravan will now include a bunch of street sweepers as primary lead vehicles.

I think you might want to edit that original post.

Fair enough, just thought it was an odd reaction.

And there were plenty of riders (Chris Horner, for one) who were interviewed who said they didn't see any, but that there must have been some because such a monumental coincidence is virtually impossible - foul play must have been involved.

No. I have to stick by the words I wrote. I'll own up to my fail.
Fair enough. I just dont want people having a go at you and then realising that you have taken back what you said earlier.

I read that the tacks were furniture tacks.
Several cars and motor bikes had tacks in their tires but I don't know if any flatted.

Very sporting of Sky and Liquigas to alow flatted riders to catch up.

On a different subject I'm surprised to see at least three riders break chains this year. I don't recall seeing in any previous TdF. Maybe it is because the chainbreaks occurred at key moments.

Good odds of that I think.

Most of the time I imagine you'd just have the announcers mention in the passing that so-and-so had some sort of mechanical issue but is now back with the peloton.

Just figure that a fair number of those unidentified "mechanical issues" may have been broken chains.

On the ITV4 highlights show here in England they had shown some of the black carpet tacks that were picked up along the route.

They also showed footage of several team cars with tacks in there tyre's. Not sure which team car it was but one of the tyre's had around 8 tacks on it.

This is a very stupid post. I am starting to doubt your membership in the Order Mammalia.

LOL. Four hours after the original post and with a few descriptive posts and a "mea culpa" in between.

Make sure you bump this in a few months if you get the chance.

It is quite widely known that an amazing number of pro riders can't shift gears properly, which is the cause of many mechanical issues, including chain breaks.

Isn't that a bit like a sprinter who doesn't know how to tie his shoes?

It's not really the same, because in cycling you are not required to keep the chain in a correct position (high gear on front - low gear on back, and viceversa) to make the mechanism work, yet it's a mistake nonetheless, and definitely a cause of chain breaks.

A similar thing can be said regarding shifting from the big chainring to the small one, causing lots of chain drops.

I think it is the same, since strictly speaking you can win a race with your shoelaces undone, it's just that once in a rare while it'll be a cause of a fall.
