Ok I have to admit it I am not in the first flush of youth or indeed possess a slim line body but I still have my standards don't yer know.
I have just brought a Specialised Propero 2 helmet because I read some good reviews on it but unfortunately there's a lack of adjustment and as a consequence the straps just come straight down to the buckle.
And boy do I look geeky.
Can anyone recommend a moderately priced helmet on which the straps rather than go straight down slope back to the bottom of the ear.

The photos of the Propero 2 helmet online show the typical Y straps so maybe yours is faulty.

That said I have used the Bell Alchera helmet for around 15 years. Price is reasonable; regular price $80 but often on sale at Performance bikes for $50 or less. It is not the best looking helmet (in my opinion) but it works for me - I like the retention/adjustment system - something I find uncomfortable on other helmets I've tried. I use this helmet for recreation, road TTs, and track riding.

Go visit some bike shops, look at the various offerings of today..Giro, Bell, Spec-Ed, some others..and decide, then buy there. Don't be one of 'those guys', who tries on and becomes a MO cowboy. Also private label, like Performance..good helmets, made by one of the big boys, just say 'performance'.

Thanks everyone for responding to my question after a bit more research I have opted to buy a Giro Savant. Hopefully that will fit me better.
The problem I had with the Specialised was that the only real adjustment to get the straps nearer my ears was the height holes inside the helmet and I could not get them higher than my jaw line which made me look like an hamster.
Probably an age thing really.

This. Helmets from different manufacturers (and maybe even the same) are shaped differently. You really need to visit a shop and try several on in different sizes until you find one that feels right. There are a number of good online resources that tell you how a helmet should fit too.

Like BK said, don't go showroom your small shop either. Inventory costs money so buy it there.
