It was a great stage, I hoped Simoni wouldve made the top of the Gavia first though as I am a great Gibo fan. But Tschopp stole nothing and rode to his well deserved win. It was a shame GC was decided already though, it would have been so cool to see Liquigas go all out on the Gavia.

ya it was a shame arroyo didn't kept pink by a minute on the mortilo :(

I was trying to find some of the early TdF mountain stage descriptions - 300km with 6 or 7 cols :D

Let's forget, for just a moment, the actual race every stage provided.
What is (was..), on paper, the best route ever?
NOTE: Every stage of every professional tour is allowed, but you must post the profile here:)

I have many doubts but today I feel this is my favourite:

Giro D'Italia 2003, stage 18
Santuario Di Vicoforte - Chianale
18a-tappa-03.jpg

It's close to what I call perfection.

If I remember correctly, Garzelli was pretty close to Simoni on the GC and was confident going into this stage, as he claimed that the final climb suited him more than Simoni and then he'd win in the final ITT. I looked at the profile and thought "Simoni's not going to wait for the final climb :D". The rest is history and evidence for the theory of "Make the penultimate climb harder than the final climb".

Yeah, one of the best stages in recent years. It's certainly epic to see just 3 or was it 4 (as I can't recall exactly) riders in the maglia rosa group when the coverage started.

Can't seem to find any videos of it though.

That Pra Loup stage is exactly what the Tour needs but doesn't do anymore. And look - the climbs aren't obvious "big name" climbs either! Couillole and Allos should probably see more action than they do.

But that stage also profited a lot from Merckx going total berserk and attacking very early. With these savage attacks, he isolated the captains from their teams. Same thing with Ocaña in 1973, only difference was, that Ocaña did not crack like Merckx in 75. That was a different style of racing, a style I would like to see more these days.

That was the stage where it was snow/sleeting or at least was on the roads. That was a rare thing indeed to see a group of 5 GC riders more or less together off the front in the final Ks of the penultimate climb.
