I rode my s/s to work this morning. On my way there I met a few friends for breakfast. I walk into the cafe in my lycra and one of the first things one of my friends says to me is "Hey, are you not on the singley today? Is that why you're wearing the roadie gear?" Now this guy has been riding a single speed for almost as long as I've been aware that they existed (he also has a road bike and a MTB with gears and full suspension so he's not a purist single speeder, although one of the first things he asked me when he saw my single speed was why did I put road tyres on it).

I wear roadie gear no matter what bike I'm riding unless it's a really short bike ride (< 10 minutes) for two reasons: 1) it's comfortable, 2) it's all I've got to bike in that's comfortable.

I mentioned earlier that I am not cool; now I have to admit I'm ignorant too. I wasn't aware that there was a single speed dress code. Can any of you single speed riders enlighten me as to what the dress code is?

Thanks.

I always ride my S/S MTB in roadie gear because:
1) It's comfortable
2) It's all I've got to ride in that's comfortable

Dress code = confirmed.

But of course I am NOT cool either :D

New to the forum but picked up on the SS post,

Just competed on the SS my first race (24hr relentless) in a team of three (all SS) and were on just beaten by four minutes for first.

I've always raced on gears but this was a real eye opener for me.

And sorry to say i'm normally lycra'd up too, more a comfort thing :)

that bike rules

I ask you all, how did I go from loving SS like it was the second coming to pure hate?

overindulgence? Or was I fooling myself all along and it always hurt that bad?

I love me some gears and rear squish again

Similar situation for me. Fell in the love with an SS a few yrs back for the all reasons mentioned. It went well for a while, even hung on for a podium against all geared bikes last year in a race. But this past season, started having more and more pain (knees, back, etc). I think it's a "body getting older than my head" type of deal.

I'm still on my SS now though am looking to go back to gears/sus this next season. I'll keep my SS for a play bike for sure tho. My son thinks it's "the coolest"...can't take that from him.

That said and all the pain aside there is something about the quietness of the drive and the ease of one gear. more in touch with the ride. zen like? full tilt hippy shi#

Hi CN forum. My 1. post and I did find in the very finest thread:)

I ride SS in the no-snow-time (then it's Rohloff). I've had a VooDoo Dambala with slipping dropouts (very bad) and a Haro Mary SS (frame cracked in three places). Now I'm eagerly waiting to get a packet from http://www.charliethebikemonger.com/index.asp containing steel Salsa El Mariachi frame. The build will be with an Exotic cabon fork. I'll definetly will post a pic when it's ready.

For the road (sorry for the off-topic) I have a Tunturi Aero (Tange tubing) from the early 80's. The use is only on sunny summer days. 53/19 has been ok so far. Could be a little lighter though.
