I am one who would never give JB or Armstrong any credibility. Armstrong was a mediocre pro cyclist with a 78 VO2. what do either he or JB know about tactics when they had every advantage and also could have a refill at any time during a GT.

GTs are won, yes, on natural power and training, but mostly on ability to recover over three weeks.

Despite the shortened stages and fewer ITT KMs, Vingo is the present king of that attribute. Pog is the best overall cyclist of this time, but Vingo has him beat on one criteria only -- recuperation. Therefore, particularly since Vingo has no team to make it hard throughout, Pog should have accepted that and made his team do nothing (particularly since he had the easiest giro since Moser's times in his legs). Visma does not have the team to make it hard each day this year (as they did in 2022 and 2023. So Pog should have rested and waited. And then -- fresh as a daisy -- won on seconds gained at the top of MTFs and with bonuses. the final ITT might still have been a question, but if the TDF had not been held at an infernal pace by his own team, he would still triumph.
