Wigans, back on the booze?

From a Eurosport interview before the start of Paris-Nice:

"Nothing will ever change, the Olympics is always the main focus, I just do things in the other four years to keep myself busy really"

Did his motivation disappear during another drinking binge or what?

Wiggins apparently decided that he didn't want to do blood transfusions anymore like he did when he got 4th place in the Tour de France when he was with Garmin, so he knows he will never crack the top 10. That's why he wants to focus on the Olympics.

Probably playing himself down after all the hype of last year. Maybe being more realistic about it too. As the London Olympics comes along it must also start to seem a more appealing prospect for success.

When Wigans speaks he makes JV look like the smartest guy in the room and Brailsford look like the dumbest.

JV perhaps made the deal of the century.

Is this a new psychological strategy?

The team paying him two million quid a year must be very happy to know that road racing is just a vacation between the Olympics. Very happy.

Message to Wiggans: Don't sic your attack wife on me for the thread title.

Are we still going on about his move from Garmin? Time to get over it.

Brailsford still runs the Olympic team. It's sponsored by the same company so they win either way. In fact it might be more in Sky's interest if Wiggins focuses on getting a bunch of gold medals and raises their profile with their target audience in the UK.

Uh...Wigans would race the Olympics for free. What's he going to do if they don't pay him 2M a year? Race for France?

Will not be happening...

Oh Mav, there's nothing to get over. Wigans as a TdF winner was/is never (and I mean never) going to happen.

JV bought low and sold high. I don't much care about Garmin or Sky, or Wigans, Brailsford or JV. I just think, in a purely business sense, JV cut a fat hog.

And in his heart of hearts, Brailsford has a serious case of buyers remorse.

In, no doubt, happier times....

I'm sure Murdoch can afford it. I wouldn't worry too much about his finances.

Why would you say that? He's a proven winner on the track. It wouldn't be surprising to see him pick up another couple of golds at 2012.

Well... the only individual gold he won was in the pursuit... which won't be in the 2012 olympics.

He'll have a good shot at the team pursuit and the madison if he put his mind to it, but the individual pursuit would be the only one he'd be a favorite to win and it's not there anymore.

That's really crap. Why do they keep taking out the good events on the track? Sometimes it seems like they target certain riders for being too dominant.

Because none of his events are there anymore. He said in the next paragraph of that interview that the team pursuit is the only one left.

But i think some here are too quick to write him off. Sure hes never going to actually podium a gt, but he can do well at the Tour. Afterall, he was 4th in 2009, beating several climbers, and only lost to Lance by a handful even though lance got a cheap 40 from the ttt and another cheap 40 from that htc break. Theres more mountains this year but he wasnt that bad in them in 09.

I just dont like the fact that they act as if bike racing doesnt exit outside France. Sure if your COntador or Andrew you can say your focusing your season around the Tour. But for Sky to say that the focus will as always be on the TOur, when their best rider is wiggins is a bit offensive to road racing and arrogant on their part as well.

TP: Sure GB are a chance but Australia is the favourite
Omnium: No
RR: No
ITT: No

So max 1 gold, could get lucky and pull a bronze in the ITT though, you never know!

They don't have the maddison at the olympics anymore either. The only event Wiggins has a chance in is the TP. It'll be an interesting event considering Aus have the two fastest IP riders in history and another two or three who can go sub 4:20 and GB (correct me if im wrong) are the only team to do 3:55 for the TP.

Maybe what he means from the comment is that road cycling is only his job while the olympics is his passion.....

This wasnt a pre prepared speech so the sentence is unlikely to have a deeper meaning.

Considering Wiggins later calls team schleck - deff leppard and he has been on several occasions caught using informal language in interviews, i would take a guess that maybe Wiggins is the type to say things in the heat of the moment, which he doesnt neccesarily mean.
