Winnings bank

Winning a race means recognition and that is what sport is about !

Continually we hear of people conforming to get on and recently we saw Graham Obree report the secret of his lack of success .

Non conforming cost him dearly and even here in CNF/mushroom farm there have been examples stated of the result of not conforming .

That Obree refused to dope and people ostracised him for this behaviour lends credence to the need to hold ALL WINNERS MONIES until the end of their career !

Racers are salaried and thus live well without winnings but ONCE they have the "prize purse" see if you can recover the money ?

Record books are easily rewritten now that we have the internet but can you remember the name of ANY racer living up to their contract and paying their team back when they were found out ? One guy attempted to do just that and was derided and the result for me is unclear .

WINNER'S prize Monies should go into a BANK, the racer should only receive the benefit AFTER the termination of their career ! Should they Dope or otherwise bring the Sport into disrepute then they lose the entire proceeds !

Johnny average can still practice "sporting fraud" but then he has little to lose . BUT imagine it was 2000 when i first proposed this idea to HV at UCI and before the Olympics , look at ALL those who have won "prize monies" since who would have had their monies confiscated and you can see why this idea never saw the light of day !

WHO can administer such a bank remains the biggest hurdle and the resolve to set it up the next BUT UNTIL the benefit of "cheating" is removed there will remain the desire for recognition .

Could it even be necessary to have "Sponsorship Deal benefits" also be held in trust to the end of a career ?

Also half of all endorsement deals please. Extending 10 years after their active career. HWSNBN as an example stole a reputation to allow him to continue to enrich himself based on past performances.

I know a nice bank in Iceland I'd recommend to manage the money.
Really such a system just screams "our sport cannot be trusted with its own money, we're a joke". Not likely to be implemented as long as the UCI is involved. Seperate races might like the idea though. Boost their budgets with discredited former winner's earnings. Guarantees they get better value for their money in the long run. A sort of insurance.

This is how the amateur athletic federation ran for years. Also with amateur cyclists. Problem being the federation took appearance fee's for their countries athletes! If you thought the UCI was bad the IAAF from 1960 – 1984 was shamless.

I thought we moved on from the 1980's? You cant expect professional athletes not to earn a salary from cycling. Restraint of trade comes to mind. If you don't pay them they'll find another sport to be good at which does pay them.

A similar idea, but a little more reasonable, was put forward by Sean Tucker:
http://cyclingheroes.tripod.com/cyclingheroes.english2/id713.html

It's hard to take this guy seriously, for several reasons; the fact that he really didn't want to admit the prevalence of doping in the domestic peloton, caving to the Lance posse and firing Andreau, that picture of Stevic in that very article... Yet still, I think the basic idea has merit.

Still, the biggest issue, and the thing which absolutely no one is addressing, is the issue of holding teams responsible. Does it even matter if Lance doped if his entire team was charged to the gills ripping the field apart? It shouldn't, since he was the beneficiary of their work. That alone should invalidate his wins, and until it does, teams won't be putting internal pressure on guys to not dope.
