Your top 10 moments of 2010

List your top 10 moments of the 2010 cycling season.

It can be anything, a race, a stage, a personal sighting (eg meeting a rider, or seeing the peloton fly by), a moment of comedy, a moment of failure or a moment of AWESOMENESS.

I was thinking of opening a similar thread.

I have two moments, both from my live reports at the Tour de France.

1) STage one of the Tour. Adam Hansen of HTC-Columbia was seriously injured in a crash near the start of the stage, but doggedly kept on. He chased the field much of the day and then helped with the sprint preparations. A true hero.

2) Just a few days later, Stage five. My son had undergone nose surgery on Tuesday and I was spending the mornings with him in the hospital. I got home about noon on Thursday, and went into out CN chat, where I was immediately asked if I was ready to do live. I had totally forgotten I was on that day, and had absolutely nothing prepared and was not in any way ready.

Still, I did the live report. To this day, though, I couldn't tell you anything about the stage or who won it. It was a rather stressful week, darting between hospital and work, but I managed it all.

There are still two races left but I'd say:

Cyclocross of Kalmthout : the whole race
Cyclocross of Hoogerheide : shoulder to shoulder between Stybar and Albert
Cyclocross of Namur : great memory for I was there
Cyclocross of Zonhoven (February) : The Nys attack; and Vantornout forgetting his bike
Cyclocross of Zonhoven (November) : Stybar and the beer
Cyclocross of Roubaix : Stybar's attack and running abilities
Cyclocross of Hasselt : favourite rider won (Pauwels)
Cyclocross of Vorselaer : Stybar crushed Albert who found an excuse with a flag and Nys accusing Simunek of making him fall.
Paris-Roubaix : Because it's Paris-Roubaix (give me back MY Carrefour de l'Arbre)
Dutch Road Championship : Favourite roadie won (Terpstra).

From memory:

1. Vino riding away from Kolobnev in LBL, I don't actually jump op and down in front of the TV that often.

2. Kuurne, what a day. Having a Dutch guy win it in front of another Dutch guy made it even better. And wasn't that young British guy Stannard?) in the group, holding on when guys like Hunt and Hushovd totally collapsed? Again, amazing day.

3. The Giro start in Amsterdam. Great atmosphere, Dutch weather, teambusses set up in a great way. Liked it better than the TDF start in Rotterdam.

4. The rest of the Giro. Best GT I ever saw.

5. Vacansoleil signing Ricco and Mosquera. Most people thought they pretty much gave up all hopes for a World Tour ticket with this. Still pulled it off.

6. The Canadian races. Again, a Dutch win helps but what I remember most is a great parcours, a race aired at a very convenient time and Hesjedal putting in a heroic performance. I'm always sceptical against new races forced into the highest ranks but this time they got it right.

7. The Australian Worlds morning. Getting up at 4:00, start drinking after breakfast, the huge breakaway, Evans fighting against all odds to keep his jersey, waking up the wife when Gilbert escapes, the tiny bit of hope when Terpstra pulls away in the final KM, the very satisfying name Hushovd as a World Champion. No need for these early races every year, but it's kinds fun every now and then.

8. The TGBM meme on this forum :)

9. The actual awesomeness of TGBM

10. This might be just me but it seems races get pulled into waaiers, at any given moment of wind, more and more over the last seasons.
Waaiers are always a good thing.

10 Cancellara at the Ronde. The attack on Boonen looked beautiful. Descent + tt got him the minute and celebrated in style, flying the Swiss flag in the middle, as thousands of flanders lions flew around him.

bettiniphoto_0050022_1_full_600.jpg

9 Gilbert has to go in Geelong. In the sun, in front of huge crowds, the favourite going in, Gilbert realised it was Now or Never and went for it. As he went a group of 5 behind him formed. This created the final exciting sequence of events before the peloton caught them just before the finish.

8 No hopers take a sprint stage. It looked like the sprinters would gobble up. It looked over with 500m to go until Arashiro kicked, Fouchard saw and Pinneau conquered.

7 Valverde going for everything. Podiums at PN, PV, LBL and a win at Romandie. He won 2 sprint stages, a mountain stage, came 2nd in 2 time trials and podiumed several hilly and mountain stages. True all rounder.

6 2 vs 3 in LBL. The group up front was Vino and Kolobnev. The group behind contained FW, AGR winners, and Valverde. Gilbert went, cracked, and Vino flew away from the Russian for Redemption.

Vino-Liege.jpg

5 Giro d Italia 2011 presentation. The video at the begining was the best. The presentation was beautiful, the interviews with the guests about every stage, and most importantly, the unveiling of an AMAZING grand tour.

4 Mosquera lights up Andora. For 5 minutes on a false flat, Eze carried 2 of the best climbers without letting them take a turn. He cracked them both and lit up the stage, though Anton won.

mosquera.jpg

3 Two days of Vino at the Tour. First day into Mende, whatever Jens can do, Vino can too. Crushes Saxo completely by getting into break, then attacks from break and misses out 3 seconds to Purito coming from Peloton. Not to be off put, the very next day crushes entire peloton on a sprint stage.

2 Huge crowds on the Zoncolan. Its great to see huge crowds in cycling. Hundreds of thousands turned out for the greatest mountain in Grand tour history, many with huge "BASSO!" signs. They got what they hoped for. Stage wasnt bad either.

1 PASSO DI MORTIROLO. Rarely does a GC battle come down entirely to one stage. And here it did. 5 guys had a chance to win. Twists and turns all the way, as Cuddles cracks, Arroyo lost the jersey, miraculously won it back, then lost it again. Thats usually the story of a entire gt. This was the story of a stage.

My fave race 2010, Traxcel wins and the youngster Stannard ultra strong but hanging on a bit at the end.. Hunt blows spectacularly but a great effort by him and probably sealed a top ride for next year despite retiring late on.

this is pretty much what i was thinking about.
vino destroying the favourites group up to ax 3 domaines was just epic, insane stuff.he even detached himself from the group a couple of times but he waited for alberto.amazing power,he could have won that stage easily.

i still got hopes to see again that video resuming 2010 il giro from 2011 presentation.

While I could've easily chosen ten from just the Giro alone, here are a few others that stood out. Too hard to rate them so I put them in chronological order.

10. Battenkill -- Making FLandis laugh on one of the harder climbs of the day. No one else was in the lead group was in a smiling or laughing mood at that particular moment.

9. Battenkill -- Watching Caleb Fairly cross the line, covered in mud, to take the win.
11_600.jpg

8. Three Days of de Panne -- Millar wins the overall.

7. Tour of The Basque Country -- Final TT, Horner wins and takes the overall.

6. Roubaix -- Fabian's "escape"
The Belgian announcers break into English ("...we have a problem!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7xjsPqHg3o

5. Cadel clawing his way to victory up the Mur de Huy at La Flèche Wallonne.

4. Giro -- Stage 9, the peloton surfs the road
http://www.universalsports.com/vide...7050.html#riders+make+waves+during+stage+giro

3. Opening TTT of the Vuelta a España...under the lights!

2. Thor in the Rainbow Jersey.

1. Two words: Katie Compton

One of the eurosport writers has written an article listing his favourite moments.

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/25122010/58/2010-review-races-year.html

At the beginning it says that "2 grand tours were really grand". Here i think " God, they are going to claim the Tour was great because their paid too". Thankfully the author recognises greatness when he sees it and said that the Vuelta was 2nd best, while the Tour was a "drab affair".

Anyone who says that understands that theres more to cycling then what Mellow Velo often refers to as the circus or somesuch.

He also talks about KBK and Giro Emilia so he knows a bit about cycling. Worth a read i suppose.

10. Goss winning at Pluoay and I think it was the same night that I was also watching live streaming of ENECO and Bobridge won there
9. Hejadel and Roche fighting for top 10's in grand tours (I Usually support anyone over the spanish and italians)
8. Ardennes Week - always my favourite week of cycling - everyone attacking and not saving energy for the next day
7. Rogers fending off attacks at California to win
6. Dog at milan San Remo
5. Cadel at FW
4. TDu stage won by LLS with Cadel, Valverde and Sagan attacking on Willunga
3. Worlds in Geeong -Riding with Polish and Danish teams in days before -cadels vallient effort, alby's last minute dash, richie and Mick in the TT, Matthews great win
2. Entire Giro and the Aussie dominance Stage 7 was awesome! Goss and Lloyd stage wins too and the mountains jersy.
1. The rise of Richie Porte!!!

On reflection, I really didn't watch a lot of cycling compared to most but the things that stand out:

#10-8 (can't omit any from this group, take your pick)
Valverde + Evans @ TDU
Sagan at TDC
Evans win Stage 7 Giro in the mud
Stage 11 Giro L'Aquila
Richie Porte @ Giro
Giro Stage 15 - Basso v Evans
Evans pulling on the Pink and Yellow, one of the only riders to have pulled on all 3 GT jerseys in a row.
Stage 3 at the Tour
Stage 17 at Tour
Velits win TT @ Vuelta
Stage 20 @ Vuelta

#2
Announcement of FlyV going for a PT license. It went tits up, yes, but this was a huge moment in Australian cycling. I couldn't sleep the night I heard because of the excitement. However we now the rest of the story. C'est la vie.

#1
It would have to be the Worlds. The anticipation that was building, the pessimism vs the optimism. Everything. The leadup racers all indicating a bunch finish. The breakaway nearly lapping the peloton, all the attacks on the last two laps. Evans fighting, Gilbert fighting. The peloton charging through in the last km and bam, Hushovd winning.
Awesome.

See to me, Langeveld saved him there on the last stage. He was gone and had almost cracked but he got on Langeveld's wheel and was brought back. A nice bit of luck.

Forgot about how dominant the Aussies (Lloyd, Goss, Evans) were at the Giro. Around the same time as Rogers won the ToC as well. It was a great week. :D

10. Tour stage 3. Hesjedal brilliant, and seeing Evans ride like a true world champion.

9. Gesink winning the stage in Switzerland. My patriotic side (which I thought I had lost long ago) played up again, and it was a nice race.

8. Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne. Hadn't watched the whole race, but wished I had. The part I did watch was absolutely amazing.

7. Nibali vs. Mosquera on the Bola del Mundo. Great battle, with Nibali as a deserved winner of the GC (even with Anton unfortunately dropping out).

6. Giro start in Amsterdam. More fun than Tour start, and just a great atmosphere. Might have something to do with the beers consumed during the day as well though.

5. Andy Schleck and Samuel Sanchez riding away from Contador in the Tour stage 8. I went into the Tour fully expecting complete domination from Contador, this gave me hope for an exciting Tour after all. That hope proved to be false, but whatever.

4. Everything that happened on the Zoncolan.

3. Cancellara riding away from Boonen in Flanders.

2. Evans winning on the Giro stage to Montalcino. One of the best races I've ever seen.

1. The entire road race world championships. Constant attacks and excitement, never a moment of boredom. I was thinking I would fall asleep halfway (since it was on from 1 till 8 AM or something), I stayed awake the whole thing and loved it.

In no particular order:

Juan Antonio Flecha finally getting his classic/semi-classic win in dramatic fashion at Het Volk.

Igor Anton's performance in the Ardennes and his early dominance of the Vuelta. A star is born and we'll see more of him in the mountains and Ardennes in 2011.

The emergence of Peter Sagan in the early season as a force to be reckoned with. Liquigas/Cannondale really has some young talent that will represent Cannondale well(I'm a proud owner of several since the late 80's).

Vincenzo Nibali's performance at the Giro and especially the Vuelta. He had shown hints of his abilities in 2009 and it has quite been rewarding to watch his development into a star of the sport.

Oscar Freire's bookend classic wins are probably my season highlights. Many had written him off as over the hill, unable to sprint with the best and even after his MSR win many here still questioned if he still had the speed to win Paris-Tours. Each year he seems to consider retirement and does something amazing to seemingly make him think, "I'm still rolling well, I may as well go another year". Such a class act and my favorite rider.

Joaquim Rodriguez's stage win at the Tour and his ability to hold his form and still compete in the Vuelta. It was great to see him finally having the chance to ride for himself on the big stage and deliver the goods. A well deserved success for another classy rider.

...and on the less than inspirational side of my top moments:

Each and every time Armstrong hit the pavement.

Andy Schleck's "Chaingate". Everytime I watch it I can't help thinking of a Seinfeld episode where Kramer is manically chewing gum while driving along, head bobbing to some bizarre music, as usual up to something strange and off the wall and suddenly his vehicle starts to break down. His smile disappears and a look of bewilderment takes over his face as he looks around
as his world crumbles before him (or something like that!).;)

Cancellara attacking while Boonen was having a breather. ...we have a problem! When it happened, I did not imagine Cancellara would complete the task.

Frank Schleck at TDF falling on the pave stage and retiring. I did not expect it. The incident put my brain in a spin, because suddenly I realized Frank could not help Andy on the climbing stages!

Richie Porte wearing white and pink jerseys at the Giro.

The muddy stage of the Giro - interesting for the viewers and hard yakka for the riders.

The Giro as a GT was brilliant

Same as Angliru - each and every time Armstrong hit the pavement

Thor Hushovd winning the worlds - to me a rider with ethics and credibility

Same as Granville57 - Cadel clawing his way to victory up the Mur de Huy at La Flèche Wallonne, but to be honest anyone to win on that final climb.

Mark Renshaw's head-but looked good on TV, although I supported booting him out.

Valverde being finally nailed from OP 2006. Cycling does not want nor need a world no 1 wearing muddy shoes. cheers
