Well, there was 1 change in the top ten: I suppose that means it was more exciting than yesterday.

Stage 8
A few months ago no-one would have dreamt of selecting Healy, but when the game started I suspect a lot would have liked to but found him too expensive.

Purple points
Just as well it wasn't Thomas who won the 'sprint' for tenth, or we would have just one scorer.

Only one of these is in the top ten for the purple point standings (Laarsland, who is 3rd, and one point doubles his margin over 4th) so really not worth a CTRL-C, CTRL-V to post.

Pink points
For the first time in several stages, pink point changes are more relevant than purple ones.

Standings
Peixotini's well balanced team, with 5 riders in the top 15, survives out front for a while longer. He will be hoping that Evenepoel hangs on, because if Roglic or Geoghegan Hart were to move into pink, that is a big jump in points for either 21 or 8 teams.

Meanwhile, the deadlock between Kazistuta and Berlus is finally broken, as Cimolai's DNS makes a difference between their scores.

Oh dear

Thanks to Rote Laterne for conducting the experiment to see whether a possible (many would say, at the time of picking, probable) winner for 91% of the budget might be a valid tactic. Even with him in the lead, and holding 2 stage wins and a bunch of leader's bonuses it would appear that that is not a route to victory, as she was 21st.
But if we have lost a battle between Evenepoel and Roglic, we have gained one between Rote Laterne and Redhead Dane.

I won't publish all the changes this makes until they are integrated into whatever tomorrow may bring, but Leadbelly would move up to 4th, and Googleplex would jump into the top ten.

Stage 10 and rest-day aftermath.
The DNS/DNF list is mouch more significant than the top ten.

Only six teams still have all 8 men still in the race, and that includes the top two, and three more of the top 7. DJSprtsch leads the casualty list, with only 4 of his 8 riders still there.

The top three on today's scores were already the top three, and TRiley in 4th was 6th on the day, so the top of the table consolidate their places. Other than there, and at the foot, plenty of changes, with huge falls for the Geoghegan Hart teams, and plenty of large rises too, none bigger than that which sees Vladimir into the top ten and into 1000 point + territory.

Halfway through, and the talk of the last few days have been the dropouts, so a quick look at their effect.

The riders who we picked that are no longer racing (disclaimer: I haven't looked at any race news since earlier this evening, so this is as per the end of stage 11).

hey. it looks like it says 8 people picked ackermann, but you only gave two people his 70 points. is that right?

I think my strategy in not picking super expensive guys is playing out well. I was worried about Covid taking people out. i didnt count on the crashes so that is just luck on my part. Still have Roglic to contend with though.

hey. it looks like it says 8 people picked ackermann, but you only gave two people his 70 points. is that right?
Thanks for spotting that. There are only 2 teams with Ackermann (JVF and Vladimir), and the points have been given correctly. Bit of a mystery as to why the spreadsheet threw that up. The content of that cell ought to be dependent on the content of the cell that has Ackermann's name, so it's not just a matter of which range I selected for sorting. I shall have to investigate.

If it is a head to head now between Peixotini and Bminchow, then that is largely down to the performances of the five riders that they have in common (Almeida, Milan, Caruso, Kamna, Dunbar), but the competitive focus rests on those they do not share.
Peixotini has Groves, Kuss and Aurelien Paret-Peintre;
Bminchow has Carthy, Haig and Valentin Paret-Peintre.

The top three teams have Almeida but not Roglic, TRiley in 4th has both of them, and Los Brolin has Roglic but not Almeida, while Bonimenier has attained 6th without either of them.
Had Roglic taken those 2 seconds off Thomas today, and gained the pink jersey, the top five would remain as they are, but with smaller gaps to those off the virtual podium.

As per my resolution at the top of the update, I'll say nothing about tomorrow, other than to predict an update at some stage in the evening.

Reactions: Riverside
Bit late, because I have been waiting for Eddie Dunbar's position to be corrected on PCS (they are CQ points, but because cq don't do a daily GC, I use PCS as my results service). Given up waiting, I'll do it manually.

Pink Points
Some GC guys took 2 seconds off some others, but that made no difference at all. Rubio moved up a few places, and that is the main non-stage result factor.

On the day:
Fewer than 100 points between first and last is the measure of a rather null day in the scoring here.

They keep telling us that the race is backloaded: will the game change much in week three?

Stage 16
Racing! By contenders!!!

Purple points
Not all contenders, of course, are picks in the game. Looks like we have a major collective goof.

Standings
The top 4 teams in the overall were in the top 6 of the day: 1st, 2nd and 3rd were 1st, 2nd and 4th. So that podium is looking confident.

Almeida teams have been ahead of those that feature Roglic for a while, now he is not only better value for his cost, but gaining more points.
I'd be interested to hear from the Almeida teams (especially those without Roglic, whether they actually expected him to be higher than the Slovenian, or was it simply a belief that Evenepoel would win, and 3rd place + nearly 600 extra in the budget seemed a better deal than second place points.
