    The bargain thread

nashbar crochet gloves, dirt cheap, work as well as anything else, and last longer Boure bibs - not bottom of the barrel cheap but great quality for price.

    The Love It/Hate It thread.

Love: The big a$$ basket on the front of my delivery bike. Brought two full growlers to work for a buddy today. Hate: handlebar bags – They get in the way of my hands and carry the weight too high on the bike. Want to try: Decaleur bag – because it looks like it will have the convenience...

So if Ti frames have a such a magical ride quality, why use carbon forks?

http://www.habcycles.com Mine is a stock size. It's heavier than carbon and aluminum bikes I have owned but I don't care, it will always be there for me.

    How bright is your light?

I've got a Magicshine light with a max output of 900 lumens but I always use the lowest of three setting on pavement.

    comparing different brand measurements

http://www.slowtwitch.com/Bike_Fit/Choosing_a_Tri_Bike_via_Stack_and_Reach/Stack_Reach_Primer_Chapter_One_95.html If you want to know weather or not a frame will fit you all you need is stack and reach (vertical and horizontal distance between bottom bracket and the top of the head tube/head...

Who says SNOW should be a problem?

Standard front hub spacing is too narrow for a straight blade fork to clear those fat tires. That’s why they used a rear hub up front. Spare parts and multiple gear ranges are incidental.

    Torque wrenches or dorque wrenches?

Nothing new here. Torque is an imperfect proxy for bolt tension. Measuring actual tension is difficult and, for cycling fastener tolerances, unnecessary. From a manufacture’s perspective supplying a torque value is enormously better than providing subjective guidance or no guidance at all...

Chain replacement, when do you do it?

I buy three wipperman chains and one cassette at the same time, and then cycle the chains every 1000km. When the chains start to skip I’ll start over. My objective is lowest cost per mile.

    Garmin Power Meters: They're Coming

I love my speedplays. That said - I would never buy a $1500 speedplay pedal. Once the bearing surface on the spindle under the needle bearing is worn, you've got to chuck the spindles - I wouldn't want that to be a 1500 part.

Pro wheel builders, how much time?, how much variation in tension?

Thanks. It takes me longer. And my results are not at good. Need more practice, more patience.

Pro wheel builders, how much time?, how much variation in tension?

For those of you who’ve built 100s or 1000s of wheels, how long does it take you to build a wheel? What’s a typical variation in tension for the finished product? What’s your maximum acceptable variation in tension before you declare the rim out of spec and start over?

Frame recommendations for on/off road adventure touring

Thanks for the suggestions. That Origin 8 looks like a wicked good deal.

Frame recommendations for on/off road adventure touring

This bike will have: • Full fenders • racks suitable for a camping load • Dynamo front hub & lights • Drop bars • Bar end or down tube shifters • Very wide gear range • Rubber will be in the neighbourhood of 700x45 • V brakes preferred, disk brakes acceptable • I’m 6’2” and expect to...

Multi-purpose wheels for training, touring... spokes?

you could forgo the double butted spokes and get strait guage 14s for the rear if you're worried about it. 28, 3x, 14 straight guage spokes makes a pretty beastly rear wheel. I've been riding one with a mavic hub and an open pro rim for many years and 10s of thousads of kilometers over all...
