What's overlooked is how strong the initial break of three was in the stage. Riders attacked throughout the stage and only two could reach the leaders who were front from kilometre zero.

He overperformed last year, just like riders have years where they underperform.

We had a wonderful stage of full gas racing and probably the best stage so far of the TDF. This seems to be forgotten in the last few pages of this thread.

Schmid made a tactical error in the last km. He needed to gamble more and get off the front because he was riding into the wind.

Yates smarter than the rest by attacking the last 500 metres of the descent before the climb. O'Connor silly to full gas at the bottom of the climg to catch up to yates which killed his finish. A well timed effort by Arensman left on the final climb.
