We'll probably never know, but it's not impossible that he made things worse by trying to ride through it last winter when it had already been diagnosed.
Laura Verdonschot is retiring at the end of this cross season due to suffering with the same condition.
Perhaps worryingly she is riding with limited power in her leg, pain and numness in her foot.
Medically its an uncommon condition usually seen in endurance athletes, particulary cyclists.
Possibly more of an issue for women, Vos, Gigante and van Anrooij have all have recent operations for this.

Iserbyt says that he will likely not just be unable to bike, but also to run in any meaningful capacity ever again. What a horrible outcome this is, short of fatal accidents I struggle to remember any cyclists whose bodies were ravaged worse by pursuing the career they dreamed of. It also sounds like he was/is on the edge of depression.
Except those who didn't make it, Sonny Colbrelli.

This is frankly awful to read. How has it gotten to this position?

I'm seeing a lot of speculation that undergoing four separate operations on the same iliac artery might not have been the best/safest idea, but without input from medical professionals it's hard to say whether it's because of that or just down to horrible luck.

Yeah, it makes you wonder how much risk was taken with that last surgery if it got this bad. Sounds like the scarring or other damage must be huge if they don't want avoid any reoccurence at all costs.
