Julien Berard of the French 'B' squad wins stage 1. Interestingly enough there are quite a few riders who are racing, and are turning pro with Columbia next year. And there is a couple of guys in the Colombian team who's name is Darwin.

The parcours doesn't seem too challenging, in terms of real climbing. Only the stage to Gerardmer has a cat 1 mountain top finish. The rest of the stages are littered with cat 3 and 4.

Again a bunch sprint today, so it seems. Tomorrow will probably decide the winner of l'avenir as it has a mountain top finish.

Funny how this could lead to a rather self-deluding outcome, and in effect defeat the purpose of "l'avenir".

If a french guy wins, France (could/)will be boasting of a new french superstar whose victory could have been achieved solely by outnumbering other national teams...

You forget that cycling is like war: The french never win and tend to break away a lot

That would be a quality TdF stage. From what I understand, the good thing about this race, is that often the host towns for the starts and finish are often used to see if they could host a Tour depart or arrivee in the future.

Little disappointed in the performance of the dutch guys. I had expected Jetse Bol up there as well. Kreder top 10, he was going to Garmin?

And what about Sicard, after his "time bonus" in the first breakaway he now takes time on the favourites fair and square and he won't lose much time in the time trial either. I think the race is his.

Good quality victory from Sicard, winning stage 1 and the time trial. Showed some versatility there.

Also, how typical is of Rabobank, who have their sponsor pay good money to fund their Pro Continental team, let the two best hyoung talents they have slip away to other teams. Van Garderen is going to Columbia, and Kreder is going to Garmin i believe. So typical. Get it together Breukink.

Mind you, Kritsky was way stronger in the TT (40 seconds ahead until he fell and give up), and without the long flight in stage 1, it's safe to say Kritsky would normally have won the Tour l'Avenir / was the strongest rider here. Too bad he fell and too bad Sicard got 1'30 bonus from a long escape in a flat stage.

Still a good race from him.

Ahh, the beauty of cycling. Many times the strongest rider gets to give excuses as to why he didn't win, and so do his fans. Its why the sport gives me the warm and fuzzies.

To be fair, that happens a lot at the Avenir, the strongest rider not winning.

Last year Bakelandts won because of the race radio screwing up. The pack wasn't told he was ahead so they didn't chase. He got massive time and ended up hanging on through the other stages and winning the overall.

So at least this time it was fair on the stronger rider since he knew that Sicard was in the break

Too bad he was stupid enough to "give" 1'30 "bonus" to Sicard even though he knew or should've known that he is strong. Kritskiy didn't make time to Sicard in any stage so can't really say he was stronger. Too bad he can't handle a bike and stay up.

Kritsky has a bright future ahead of him anyway. WIll be interesting to see him at Katusha next year ( they have made a few nifty signings btw)
