If an improved Freire were to emerge, that would wreak some serious havoc in the peloton.

Anyone see past Degenkolb and Matthews?

I doubt either will be able to climb as well as a top form Freire.

Degenkolb looks to have a very bright future in the cobbled classics, if this season is any indication.

Matthews I think could develop into almost anything, so maybe a future in hilly classics.

Let's not forget other bright stars, like EBH, who it's hard to believe is still only 24, or Sagan, or even Phinney who has won stages as a sprinter and who would still be super if he only managed to achieve half of what he's hyped up to be.

Expect a lot of wins to come from these five, only really missing a GT GC rider.

What? The LBL of your dreams?

You really do sound like a broken record on that one. Nowadays he's better on the flats than on the climbs, so let's not assume he'll do as well in the hills as he did when he was 20 years old, even when he loses some weight.
I agree he is better on that nowadays, because as I said, he has become bulkier (and thus also heaver).
That still doesn't change the fact he does have talent for the ardennes classics and stage races like that too, and I think in the latter you can achieve more, there are far more high-profile races to win. The cobbled classics are few in number. But Boom loves Flanders and Roubaix too much to ever change i think

I might not know a lot but how about TJV.

Last year's Degenkolb and Matthews? (name of Peter Sagan)

Whoops. Should definitely have included him. Kind of embarrassing, but I'll live.

Was more looking at sprinters turning into classics riders.

Anyway, TVJG will be a contender in stage races for many years, and could win a GT, but doesn't stand out as a "mega talent" like the other names.

I was referring to you saying they miss a GT GC rider. Duarte could be another talent for the GT.

I can't see degenkolb winning this my money would be on vino and if the sprinters who can climb stick around I would expect ebh to beat him anyway.

I guess I should say something about the race

BotD:

Sven Vandousselaere (Bel-OLO), Leonardu Duque (Col-COF) et Vincent Jérôme (Fra-EUC) sont passés au km 31 avec une avance de 4’30’’ sur le peloton

On about 40-41km for the first hour.

From that generation (1987-1990, which I assume you are talking about, rather randomly) there aren't really any massive GT talents that stand out. Nairo Quintana could be one. Or Steven Kruijswijk

Les hommes de tête ont parcouru 46,5 kilomètres dans la première heure de course. (source)

Tailwind apparently.

Same here, damn ES. Who cares about some 100th player on the worldranking vs a 150th player tennis. :<

Tennis almost always has precedence over cycling at Eurosport it seems. Even during the Tour except in the most crucial stages.
