It's nice to know someone out there is studying 'cycling'. I wrote my bachelorsthesis about cycling but they wouldn't let me write my masters about the same subject. Welcome.

Yeah I've gone the other way, I didn't write my undergraduate thesis about cycling, but I did my Masters and will my PhD... It's a struggle to make it seem 'real' though, most people say that either sport isn't that important to study, or that cycling is not as important as football therefore shouldn't be studied as much... What did you write about? My project deals with how La Vuelta Ciclista a Espana interacts with national and regional political identity within Spain from 1978 onwards. If anyone needs Spanish or Catalan translating, give me a buzz since google translate can only read joy!

Well it's not that writing on sports wasn't allowed. It just wasn't allowed to write bachelors and masters on the same subject. The subject of my writing was somewhat loosely "cycling and the Roman church". I know a lot of work has been done on Cycling and Flemish nationalism. Was that your subject as well?

Nah, I did something about the representation of cycling in Flemish newspapers.

It's pretty odd, there are seven stages in the Volta, six of them are likely sprint finishes, and yet the sprinters field is so weak it wouldn't be surprising if Petacchi won +3 stages and even Rojas won one or two.

as there are no time bonuses, is it correct that the place in the general classification depends on the total aggregate of individual classification on each stage? That could become very interesting if there were no gaps created bewteen the overall contenders on tomorrow's stage. Or on other words, that would put Cataldo, Contador and Mollema in a very good position while Urans 101th place today could be crucial

Yeah why would you pay tuition fees to write about cycling when its going to get you know where in life, have fun with that.
You may as well sit with your head between your legs looking at a mirror to study your own back side

The only reason you need to write these things is because they want you to learn how to work with sources and write decent scientific essays. The subject is not really all that important.

For example I recently wrote about the Greek/Roman influence in Hitler's project Welthauptstadt Germania and how they used it for their own ideology. But I could just have easily wrote about the popular show "Rome"... They hardly care about what you write as long as it somewhat relates to the assignment you're given(in this case reception history of the classics).

I study (Contemporary Spanish) History, but as a research student studying cycling is about my career i.e. leading towards a professorship in Contemporary Spanish History rather than about fulfilling module choices as per one of the other posters... Plus it's not really studying cycling per se, it´s more about how cycling fits in with other things, in my case questions of national and regional identity, which are so fun in most countries!

Who else thinks that a Volta a Catalunya with a lack of sprinters and a cohort of great tour de France contenders should be more mountainous?
