Yes!! What a great win for Phinney and BMC!
I told you guys he would do it:D
He is one of the top prologue riders in the world already at age 21.
BMC should really give him a shot for the prologue at liege.
He just dominated the field, to be honest I was not 100% sure if he would win as Geraint was looking super strong, but he proved me wrong!
BMC have started off the giro right, hopefully they can get more wins with hushovd, Frank and a on form Ballan. Pinotti hopefully can hang in the mountains and get a top 10.

I would not send Phinney to the TDF as he would be cooked from the Giro ( even though he probably needs it to get the Olympic TT spot ). He is still young and has already raced a bit this year.

Besides BMC do not need him to go to the TDF as Gilbert might get yellow on the first road stage- they also need an experienced team to help Cadel.

Remember the Olympics will have a lot stronger field with Martin, Cancellara and Wiggins. It will be interesting to see what he does against that level of opposition but he was impressive today.

That is so true- there shall also be riders like Cadel, Grabsch and a few others too.

The fact is today he won a prolgue ( the Olympic ITT will be lomger ), it was very impressive but Talansky's ride at Romandie was too and Levi/ Zabriskie are going to be factors due to their past performances and so it is not a foregone conclusion that he will even get the spot.

Still don't understand why us Staters have only one slot at the Games.

They have one slot because that is all they have earned. They finished top 15 in the World Tour nations ranking so they get one slot.

The countries with 2 slots earned them by finishing in the top 10 of the 2011 WC ITT. If USA Cycling can't get one of their TTers to turn up the WC with the aim of hitting a top 10 then that's their fault. Other nations made sure they had riders focused on the 2011 WC top 10 to ensure 2 slots at the Olympics

But TBH, I'd question if the US TTers deserve a second slot. Can't really recall the last time a US rider won a TT against a top field in a big race or a championship. Phinney won today in a prologue without any of the big TT names in the field, Talansky came second to Wiggo last week, but not really the sort of course you get on a championship TT course.

Yes, I get that, but the matter is further complicated by these two facts:
a) There's a significant Russian-speaking minority in the Ukraine, and
b) <g> is used consistently to transliterate Ukrainian Г in some romanization systems too, without it being necessarily a Russian romanization.

I vaguely remember a story from about the time when the media stopped referring to him mostly as "Gontchar" and started with "Honchar", where he said the g was a transliteration error he had just then got sorted out in his licence. But the exact opposite of that story has been mentioned here.

Here are 2 examples of spelling "Гончар" (in Ukrainian and in Russian) from Forvo:

Hope this helps :)

On a side note: “гончар” means “potter".
