Boonen isn't really specialized in Italian races anyway. He has only won one race on Italian soil in his entire career. When asked what the difference is between Italian and Flemish races he will always say Italian races explode in the final 10km while Flemish races already explode with 60km to go.
Yeah. I'm sure he was talking about Strade Bianche when he said that

He also rides Tirreno-Adriatico sometimes. And it's generally true for a lot of Italian one day races. Strade Bianche doesn't start from 60km out. A big group is usually still together on a pretty selective course.

Boonen's comment simply doesn't apply to this race, and you know it. He probably said it when this race didn't even exist yet.

He rides Tirreno, but we are talking about one day races, ain't we?

That's the peloton who makes the race explode, the Italian races themselves are not to blame for this.

I'm not criticizing anyone, it's a race mentality. You don't see the big favorites attacking from over 60km out in Italian races, while it's pretty common for the cobbled classics. I fail to see how it does not apply to this race. We won't see the winning move from 50km to go unless someone miscalculates and the break survives lol. Some big star Italians do have a race mentality of attacking far out from the finish though, Nibali for example. Bettini in the past with his crazy attacks sometimes. Pantani obviously, but that's not in one day races, but in Grand Tours. But he always deserves a mention. :)

Tirreno is THE stage race for one day racers.

It's not quite you, it's Tom :) My point being that why doesn't Tom come to an Italian race with strong QST squad and explode it from 60km to go? IMO there are teams which are capable of doing this. I get what you're talking about but it's a tricky thing. It rather applies to the mentality of Italian peloton but not the races.

Because Boonen rides in Paris-Nice instead of Tirreno-Adriatico. Like I said, he feels the Italian races aren't suited to him. I just gave an answer to your question of why he doesn't come.

usually they show bundesliga on the eurosport 2 hd channel, while they broadcast other programs on the eurosport 2 non hd channel( at least that is what they do in Italy) .
