A leg injury sustained from a crash a while ago. He gave himself not the slightest chance to perform here, especially after his TT debacle where he had no pwer at all.

I hope he'll continue to combine it for a few more years to dominate the cross with the elites for one or two years before fully switching to the road though.

Yeah, I read it too just now after I posted, that he'll continue to focus on the cross the next four years. But of course 'focusing on cross' isn't the same as only doing cross. The team that he signed for, BKCP, does acually do some road races, mostly Belgium 1.1, 1.2 races, but some outside of that as well.
