2013 Tour de France, Stage 5: Cagnes-sur-Mer→Marseille (229 Km)

Who caused the pile up? Nacer Bouhanni of course.
Came off the barrier, changing line for the umpteenth time, clipped the OPQS rider's rear wheel. (as did the BMC rider with the first crash)
Down in middle of road. Pile up ensued.

Surprised nobody here seems to have picked it out.
Had to break my duck for this.

That makes it look like two accidents - the Sky rider against the barriers on the extreme right and the Lotto(?) rider in the middle of the pack. They look completely unconnected.

Looks like Kiriyenka dropped the chain?

No one was beating Cav today but what was up with Greipel? Sagan went around him like it was nothing. I think Greipel's going too hard on the intermediate sprints...

I don't think going for intermediate sprints should make any difference if he's got good condition (you recover)? Does anyone know if Greipel's preparation for this Tour was interrupted? It would be great to have some serious competiion for Cav on these stages. I think an on form Andre is the only true sprinter at this Tour who could at least make Cav work for his wins.

Van den Broeck crashes

In the final straight there was another crash in full sprint. Jurgen Van den Broeck was one of the victims. The GC rider from Lotto-Belisol appears to have have been lucky all things considered.

Or at least that was the first diagnoses of team doctort Jan Matthieu:
"At first sight he seems to suffer from fleshwounds on both knees. He's in pain but i think it won't be that bad."

Thanks!

Does anyone know what the record is for winning stages in consecutive years?

André Darrigade: 10, 1955-1964, still a lot of work to do, Cav.
Indurain: 7, 1989-1995;
(Armstrong: 7, 1999-2005)
André Leducq: 7, 1927-1933

Bernard Hinault won stages on all of his 8 tdf's, but they weren't in consecutive years (didn't participate in 1983)

That is from the running report done by a Sporza guy while running after Van den Broeck. Or the exact same content at least. Doctor had only gotten a quick look at that point, so hard to tell this information is accurate.

He just needs to attack on one of the harder stages.

He needed to go with the move on stage 2 and he should give up sprinting from a reduced group. If Gerrans can beat him, he has no chance to win a sprint, so he needs to win by attacking. All or nothing.

Today he was just as fast as Cav, but he was already two bikes behind to start with. He definitely can win against anybody, even Cav, when they could get him into the right position.

It was the only info available at the time the question was asked.

JVDB has a sore knee which was bruised heavily, wonders how he'll feel tomorrow. He didn't need to go to the hospital for the time being. They hope everyting will be allright and feel lucky it's a flat stage tomorrow. They hope his knee won't continue to swell.

He says Bouhanni fell right in front of him.

Im not so sure 1 camera shot made it look close but Cav had it well under control, Cav is the Sprint king 6 GT tage wins this year so far. Sagan I don't think has beat Cav in a Flat sprint except 1 stage early on in the year. Cav is unbeatable with a leadout last year he did not win a stage v Greipel in the Ster ZLM tour in the build up to the TDF and it was the same as this year and I honestly thought Greipel and Kittel would be the best this year. Look at Cav today though made Andre look silly really.

anyone know how kittel is.

Kittel came down in that first little crash with about 10km to go so never got inolved with the big crash at the finish as he never got back on. Sounds like he's fine. Official team site quote:

Marcel Kittel:

“It’s such a shame that I came down. Before the race we knew that it would be a difficult stage today with the hills so we decided to go for John but if I was still be in the bunch we would sprint for me. However the moment we wanted to change plan I came off and as it was approaching the finish it was impossible to get back up there. Apart from missing skin on my left I am ok. Tomorrow will be another chance, the team is looking good and everybody is focused and motivated. So I am really looking forward to that!”
